BEST TAKES TITLE 27-22 OVER BERGER/BROWELL
1
Best won his first ever BRFL title with a 27-22 win over top seed BERGER/BROWELL
who suffered the same fate as the last five number one seeds - a loss in the
championship game. For Best, the ninth different champion in the league's nine
years, won in his seventh season. He first made the finals in 1988, his rookie
year, but failed to avenge the loss that year until now.
The game itself was very slow starting. After the seven 1:00 games on Saturday,
the score stood at 2-0 with Best's QB, Buffalo and receiver Andre Reed shut out,
and 2 points from the Green Bay D/ST. Things perked up during the 4:00 games
with Best getting three scores, including two from Natrone Means. B/B countered
with 8 from K Gary Anderson. The score stood at 20-8 Best, and remained that
way through Sunday night when OJ McDuffie and Irving Fryar failed to score.
B/B had half his lineup going Monday night. Best had Watters and Reviez.
However, the Monday night game between San Francisco and Minnesota was very
conservatively played, with the 49'ers pulling their starters before the half.
The five point margin was as close as it got as Best sweated only a mid-fourth
quarter passing TD by backup Elvis Grbac. B/B suffered the curse of the 49'ers:
they don't show up the last week if there is nothing to play for.
The road to the championship had it's usual mixture of upsets and upstarts,
#11 TALBOT blew his way into week 16 with crushing wins over #6 JONES/KLINGMAN
#3 OUTLAW, but hit the wall against BEST, 42-17. STROUPE briefly relived his
1990 title run, by catching CZ and JACKSON on a bad day until B/B tripped him
up. And what might have been: WALLACE would have become the champion again,
had he not switched his kicker at the last minute in a 45-44 loss to Best in
week 15. No roster scored more points than Wallace's down the stretch: The
Favre/Sharpe combo clicked 11 times in 5 games. In the end it was 1 vs 2 as it
had been 5 of the last 6 years.
