Week 1: "No Moss, No Moss" cried CZ

Game of The Week
56 CJ PIT Q 12, WDunn 0, RMoss 12, JStewart 13, JRice 6, ADelGreco 12, WAS D 1
46 CZ JAX Q 12, KAJ 7, JGalloway 13, JSmith 6, Y Thigpen 0, SJefferson 0, JHanson 8 NE D 0
Not sure if CZ was among the doubters thinking Randy Moss would be wearing orange (as in jumpsuit) before he'd wear purple (as in the Vikings colors), but he is a definitely believer now. The old man put up a respectable 46 in week 1, but Jackson had 56... Moss and James Stewart were the difference. Stewart nicely covered CZ's Jacksonville combo and Moss offset a good game from Joey Galloway. Chalk another up for CJ in the leagues oldest rivalry...one that began when Randy Moss was wearing leg irons and Buster Browns.
47 BST GB Q 12, PStoyanovich 15, Carolina D 1, ASmith 0, JMoore 6, CPickens 0, KJohnson 13, MChmura 0
39 WAL KC Q 6, MHollis 6, GB D 15, TDavis B 12, NKaufmann 0, FLane 0, RdSmith 0, IHilliard 0

The other game in the Old School Division saw Best defeat Wallace 47-39. Chief concern to Wallace was the health of KC QB Elvis Grbac, who may be sidelined a week with a mild shoulder separation. Grbac threw for a score, got hurt and turned the offense over to Best's kicker Pete Stoyanovich who accounted for 15. This was the 17th meeting of these two teams - the BRFL's most frequent. A series dominated by Best with 12 wins, but a loss when it really mattered, the '96 Super Bowl.

29 JK DET Q 6, BSanders 0, EGeorge 7, RBrooks 0 SSharpe 6, T Martin 0, NJohnson 9, SF D 1
14 DP Oak Q 2, AMurrell, IBruce 1, KMcCardell 0, TAllen 1, TBrown 0, JElam 10

Miserly loves company, especially if your company only scores 14 points. So, despite a miserable 29, JK wins in week 1. Small consolation for ECU fan Klingman, who for all we know is still sobbing in the stands in Blacksburg, Va. On the other hand, Dickie P might not be as unhappy as you would think. His Chiefs were the ones who put the hurt on the QB team.

59 OUT SEA Q 18, RLongwell 8, ARZ D 3, DLevens 6, GHearst 16, JAnderson 0, HMoore 7, EMcCaffery 0
17 BAR DEN Q 6, JKasey 2, NYG D 9, JBettis 0, MAlstott 0, BCoates 0, TOwens 0, JJett 0

Outlaw might have his best team since '95 when he won the championship. The whispers in the league were that he stole the draft...Seattle QBs in round six! As a third round pick, Garrison Hearst, looks like a steal. His 96 yard run is perhaps the longest TD run in BRFL history. No you won't find Tony Dorsett going 99 in our archives...slightly before our time.

For Barry, this might be payback for 90-28 back in 96.

Bud or Brad?
70 MOS MIN Q 24 RSmith 1, DBennett 7, MFaulk 1, AFreeman 14,IFryar 0, TPederson 8, Sea D 15

Another payback for another historic rout. This time
  • 86-28 in 95. Poor Bud... Everytime he looked in the mirror on Monday, he saw Brad Johnson. (actually that's not that much of an exaggeration...)Mos and Hale flirted with the opening day scoring record, but fell five short.
Did you notice?. The guys that took sooo long at the draft, Mos and Outlaw, had the best opening week. Expect next year's draft to be an all nighter....
  • 44 STP TEN Q 6, GAnderson 7, PIT D 0, CDillon 6, CGarner 0, CCarter 12, MHarrison 7, WWalls 6
    29 TAL SF Q 19, RCunningham 8, TB D 1, ESmith 1, JReed 0, CConway 0, NMeans 0, RWatters 0
Talbot finally lost a week 1 game. Stroupe gets a rare week 1 win. So much for historic trends... However, there is some familarity in the way this game played out: Talbot was all QB as usual, thanks to the shootout in San Francisco. Stroupe got minimal contribution from his QB. In fact Steve McNair was injured, forcing the Oilers to bring out of mothballs, none other than Dave Krieg - who is even older than Stroupe (by a few months)
