Week 2: MOS holds off Talbot 62-60

Mosakowski and Hale may have felt that a five TD cushion facing San Francisco QBs on Monday night might have allowed them an opportunity to turn in early. However, not much is certain in this league, and their old pal Wallace can tell them about the time he lost a Super Bowl with a similar lead over San Fran Qbs.

The rest of the league was equally wild with late defensive points bringing two teams from behind to win.

Terrell Davis Ty Law Brad Johnson
Terrell Davis reeled off two 50 yard touchdowns and 22 points to help Wallace blitz Jackson 51-14.
"I fought Ty Law and Ty Law won" laments Best as CZ again pulled out a game with a defensive score.
"Second Opinion Monday". Several thought to be mild injuries were reevaluated as bad news for owners of Brad Johnson, Dorsey Levens and Rae Carruth.

Robert Smith joined Min QBs and the phenominal Seattle Defense in the scoring parade. Mos total of 132 points after two games is a league record. Best had 131 last year.

No sweat right? Wrong. At halftime of the Redskin 49'er game Young had three scores. Then came a toss to Marc Edwards, a Talbot reserve. Then came three more red zone opportunities with Young firing pass after pass into the end zone and coming up empty.

Talbot breaks the record for the most points in a losing cause (CZ had 58 in week 1, 94).

The papers Monday said Wallace was dead. That was George and not Bob. Bob Wallace is alive and well and is dominating Calvin Jackson once again. This time it was a 51-14 crushing. Terrell Davis, The first pick in the BRFL draft, scored 22 points. Including two 50 plus yard runs. Napoleon Kauffman had an 80 yard run. and the newly aquired NY Giant Qbs threw two. All these points coming at 4:00 games.

New England CB Ty Law returned an errant Peyton Manning pass for an touchdown giving CZ a 39-32 win over Best. The play also cements CZ's reputation as a comeback artist specializing in defensive TDs.

The East division finishes this round of divisional play all even, and much the same fashion as they did back in 1992. Best beats Wallace, but loses to CZ. CZ beats Best but loses to Jackson. Jackson beats CZ but loses to Wallace. Wallace beats Jackson, but loses to Best. The teams that split in 92, Best/Jackson Wallace/CZ play in week 11.

All the wild games this weekend, and we get this ho-hummer. Stroupe, 2-0 for the first time since 1992 gets a gift from the schedule maker, helping him avoid 9 other teams that outscored him this week. Deitrich has never been 0-2. Bud, who had been the winningest BRFL team in terms of percentage last week, has slipped behind Mosakoski-Hale and Wallace into third place in the comprehensive standings.

It's good news, bad news for Outlaw this week. The good news is a win over Peil and a 2-0 start and division record. The bad news is the injury bug has bit once again. Dorsey Levens follows Ki-Jana Carter to the sidelines. Leven's injury, a broken leg - not season ending, marks the second consecutive year that Outlaw's first round pick has been injured in the early season. Last year it was Jerry Rice.

"Hasta La Vista, AB", crowed JK in their usual pre-game woofing. However, it was JK sweating bullets Monday night. Terrell Owens' early score put Barry ahead 41-40. However, it was the ineptitude of the Redskins that saved JK. The Redskins turned the ball over three times to JK's SF defense and they were able to squeak out a win, 43-41.

Earlier in the weekend, it looked like Barry over Barry. Barry Sanders accounted for 22 points. Adam Barry answered back with John Elway's 19. With the win, JK shares the division lead with Outlaw and is 2-0 for the first time since '94.

Week 3 Preview

September 17
Congratulations and a round of cigars from the presidential humidor for our four undefeated teams. However, this week. only one of you is guaranteed to be left standing. Stroupe and JK face tough opposition, and Mosakowski-Hale faces Outlaw, a battle of the league's highest scoring teams.

The prognosticator took it on the chin last week: 1-5. Had Talbot and AB not fell short in their Monday comebacks, I would have been a respectable 3-3. As it is, I sit slightly below the Mendoza line at 5-7.

Mosakowski-Hale (2-0) vs Outlaw (2-0)
Off to a 2-0 start and owning the BRFL record for most points after two weeks and now the winning percentage king of all time in the BRFL, Mosakowski and Hale are seeking respect from the rest of the league.

"They're the Jeff Gordon of the BRFL", sniffs Jackson, "They haven't paid their dues".

One who has is Outlaw. He toiled in obscurity for years before winning it all in 1995. He is also off to a good start. However, he has a tough spot this week. His backfield, the envy of the league, is decimated by injuries and the NFC West bye. His QB, Seattle, gets to feast on yet another NFC East patsy. However, that presents opportities for MOS's Kicker and Defense.

Jeff Gordon does take a lot of grief, but he does win and so will MOS.

Wallace (1-1) vs Jones-Klingman (2-0)
Terrell vs Barry. New York vs New York? Both Wallace and JK have added new QBs via the waiver wire. I ever can't recall a BRFL match-up that featured both QBs from the Big Apple. The meaningless stat of the week. JK has won four of the last five from Wallace. The reason this is meaningless is that Wallace should win.
Best (1-1) vs Peil (0-2)
Peil needs a jumpstart after scoring a league low 43 points in two weeks. Best finds himself squarely in the middle of the pack, 1-1 and scoring the league average. Peil sees his Oakland QBs playing at home vs Denver, in a game that tends to be a shootout. Best had Green Bay facing a Cincinnati secondary - perhaps a little too confident after feasting on Scott Mitchell's bumbling. Perhaps the edge in the game goes to Best whose Viking defense might get a "Batch" of intreceptions from Mitchell's rookie replacement.
Czupryna (1-1) vs Talbot (0-2)
Pity Talbot. 60 points and loser. Father-in-law CZ is sympathetic as he once scored 58 and lost. There's a lot riding on this family feud...If CZ loses, "the yard king of Apex" has to spend the rest of the football season putting in Talbot's new yard. If Talbot loses, he just has to stay out of CZ's yard lest he brings any dreaded crabgrass seeds.

The guess here is that Talbot shot his wad on Monday might. Steve Young is home in Utah tending to his yard this weekend, therefore Talbot has no chance.

Jackson (1-1) vs Stroupe (2-0)
After the draft, Jackson noted that he had "the type of team that would score 50 one week and 20 the next". Well, he was off by 6 as it was 56 in week 1 and 14 in week 2. Stroupe on the other hand is always very consistent with his scoring.

I realize if I pick Calvin here, to predict a 4-0 sweep by East division teams, I'm an "effete East Division snob". I am aware that the rest of the league, in light of my recent incessant plugging of the new Comprehensive standings might be sensitive of being reminded of how powerful the East's teams are and rivalry may emerge between the teams in the "Old School division" and the rest of the league. So, I'm a snob... Calvin to win.

Deitrich (0-2) vs Barry (0-2)
I guess the question I had for this game is "Where the hell is Belize". AB is spending his vacation there. Is he a Peace Corps volunteer? I have visions of him scooping rice in a bowl to feed starving children asking them if they have any updates and of him bartering with merchants in the city market for a USA today. So, here is this weeks Inane Statistic from a Web Page called "Where in the hell is Belize?.
Where the hell is Belize? Where is Belize, in South America? That is the question most people ask when first hearing about Belize. Contrary to what some people think, Belize is not in South America, nor Africa. It is, however, situated in the heart of Central America. Most people don't know that this Caribbean wonder is just a hop, skip and a jump from the U.S. Right under Mexico, next to Guatemala, welcoming the waves of the Western Caribbean Sea. But that is part of it's charm. It has always been there but nobody noticed it. For the most part, only a small portion of the world's tourist population have been to Belize; that has kept Belize's Barrier Reef, Maya ruins and pristine rain forest "unspoiled" for all to enjoy.
Judging by the Map above, Two of those cities don't have football teams and another has a bye. He might be able to find a Dolphin Fan that would tell him the Jerome Bettis did nothing...And Bud wins his first game
