Bengal Trickery Upsets MOS

Pittsburgh Steeler fan Barry Mosakowski was feeling rather depressed on Sunday. The trick play used by the Bengals - a TD to Carl Pickens when it looked as if the Bengals were trying to kill the clock - won the game for Cincinnati. It also was the difference in this BRFL game with Best. The play gave Pickens a TD plus enough yardage to exceed 200 yards. The seven points generated was the difference in Best's 39-32 win.

Both Best and Mosakowski-Hale were missing three starters including their QBs, so as expected, a shootout never emerged between two of the league's highest scoring teams. Neither backup up QB was impressive, and the game remain tight until the end. It is the second straight win in the 30's for Best. He also lost two games in the 30's this year. His record, Like MOS's is 4-2.

Always bet the "over" on the Barry/Talbot game. As noted in the preview, these guys always have a shootout. This game was no exeception. Barry had great top to bottom scoring. He had enough faith to start Ben Coates who scored twice - his first two scores of the year. Even the lone guy available from his bench, Terrell Owens scored.

Talbot is scratching his head for answers. He boasts a team where his QB scores 3+ TDS a game, and is second in the BRFL in scoring and has a meager 2-4 record. The high scoring non playoff slot awaits.

Bud has won his second in a row after an 0-4 start. The reverse is true for Outlaw. Despite the winless start, BUD proved to be no "Patsy" as his New England QB Kicker combo scored 34 of his 37 points. Perhaps seeking to diversify a little bit, Bud as offered to trade New England QBs and go with emerging Atlanta - his backup.

Outlaw continues to be plagued by injuries and rumors thereof. He cut questionable OJ McDuffie to pick up a healthy Irv Smith. About all you could say about's Irv's contibution to Outlaw's team this week is that he blockled well for Garrison Hearst.

Wallace "ate his Chucky Soup" this week as Terrell and the boys found someone they could pick on. The loss ended a three game losing streak, and extended Stroupe's losing streak to 4. Davis scored and romped for 200 yards and the Giants QBs accounted for two scores. The rumored trade of Terrell to JK did not go down. Perhaps with this small vote of confidence, Wallace might try to build around Davis.

If Peil had any regrets about the Fred Taylor/Eddie Kennison trade yet, he felt them immediately Monday Night as Taylor dashed 77 yards for a score. Later he added another and therefore accounted for half of Jackson's points this week. It was a lackluster way for Jackson to pick up his 99th career win. The win was Jackson's fourth straight and ended Peil's three game streak. Peil made a run late run as Keenan McCardell scored twice in the fourth quarter.

JK held off the Old Man on Monday night as CZ's Jacksonville combo and Kareem Abdul Jabbar could not close a 22 point gap. The win ends personal three game losing streak vs CZ. The loss makes JK 5-1 for the first time ever. CZ is 1-5...worst record in the league.

Calvin Jackson: Our Man of the Century

It is time to pay homage to Calvin Jackson, our leader, as he will attempt to win his 100th BRFL game this week. Where would the BRFL be without him... besides the fact that he puts at least a Benjamin in the pot every year. He is our last link to the founding fathers. Never mind that he won his only Super Bowl since before 9 current members and 10 former members were even in the league... he is the most competative of all the owners and every time you play Calvin, it is a big game.

Another 4-2 week last week. I'm slowly gaining respectability back to an over all of 16-20. The Medoza line is within my sights...

Wallace vs Barry ........................... Barry by 6
A quick study of AB's tendancies is that when he has a big game (50 or more points), he usually doesn't shoot his wad for the following week: he averages nearly 40 points. That bodes well for him this week, despite the Denver bye. Actually, the bye hurts Wallace more, as he loses Davis and Rod Smith, his only productive players. Adam should roll.
wk 7: Best vs Outlaw ............................. Best by 7 line
Best has lost three straight years to Outlaw. To combat this jinx, Best will start Bert Emanuel, and Outlaw fixture from 1995-97. He shouldn't need him. Outlaw is banged up and his QB is on a bye.(This is the third straight week Best is playing a team with a QB on a bye.) On the other hand, an angry Brett Favre returns for Best, and Outlaw is lacking Derrick Mayes and Dorsey Levens to counter him. We should know soon how this game will turn out. The Pack plays on Thursday.
wk 7: Jackson vs Talbot ......................... Talbot by 9
Despite the hype, Calvin will lose this week. Talbot is too good and has too favorable a match-up with San Francisco hosting Indy. Jerry Rice won't catch all the touchdowns...better start creating the mold for his Hall of Fame bust.
An interesting sidebar might be CJ's Randy Moss vs TAL's Jake Reed. Reed has been pretty much a non-factor since Randy Moss joined the Vikings. So Calvin, it always seems that coaches need a couple games to reach a milestone win. The hype will continue next week for you.
Czupryna vs Deitrich ............................. Czupryna by 6 1/2
Bud is shopping the new England QB's and at press time, no one has pulled the deal. If he trades New England or benches them in favor of Atlanta, he is missing a golden opportunity to needle CZ. The old man is a diehard Pats fan, and in the prior three years when he has faced them, he has lost the game in a shootout. I think Bud will win regardless of who he uses, but it is always fun to force a guy to root against his favorite team.
Jones-Klingman vs Mosakowski-Hale ........................ Mos by 12 1/2
The "hyphen" bowl. It wasn't always that way. This was the game last year where we discovered that Ron Hale is the fantasy mastermind and Barry Mosakowski was merely the mouth. That was week 12 last season. Hale started two players that they hadn't used in weeks and pulled off a 34-33 win and claimed regular season first place. That's when we added the "dash Hale".

We know who the mouth of the JK duo is. Is there a mastermind there? I expect Mo-ha to rebound with a win.

Peil vs Stroupe .......................................... Stroupe by 1
If Gordon Forbes of the USA today were handicapping this game, it would be "one star", and he'd tell you to "go rake the leaves". It is a little early to do that in Raleigh, North Carolina, but it might be worth a drive to the mountains to look at the leaves. They should be at their peak at the higher elevations, and the dry weather we experienced in late Summer will promote lots of good color. I suggest that you pack a lunch and stop at a roadside table to eat. Be patient as traffic will be heavy along the Blue Ridge parkway. Natives, like Stroupe, will tell you that old folks, like Peil, will be driving slow clogging the roads. Radio reception is bad in the mountains, so don't expect to hear any games or scoring updates. Not that it matters in this game. There will be very few scores. Stroupe will win because he has a better kicker.
