Wallace Struggling in New Format

Under the old tournament format, Wallace was known as "Mr December". He went 2-1 in Super Bowls in those five years. Under the new format, Wallace is more of a "Mr October" of late, winning three straight to move to 4-4, but he still not yet in the playoff picture.

His first problem is in the divison where 6-2 Best and Jackson currently have a lock on those spots. 4-4 is good enough for second place in the other division, but not in the East.

His other problem is with points. Two slots will be available to the highest scoring teams that are left. Unfortunately for Wallace, he is not one of then, but he is close. Ironically, the teams in the league with the two worst records, Czupryna and Barry have the most points among those remaining.

Wallace has been trying to trade Terrell Davis for the past three weeks. But lately, with the way Davis has been playing, he is almost untradable. Now Wallace has won three straight and is only a few points short of making the playoffs on points. Davis' 21 points was enough to beat Outlaw.

Outlaw continues to be AWOL from the league. Although he did SR a defense this week, he continued to play with his default line-up which contains the injured Derrick Mayes.

Best continues on his current roll with his fifth straight win. Save for the 85 point outburst in week 4, in none of those victories did he register more than 39 points. The turning point in this game with Deitrich came in the Green Bay Baltimore game. BUD's Travis Jervey, with a reputation as a fumbler, was not given a goal line call. That instead went to Brett Favre, Best's QB, who scored. The result was a 12 point swing that would have made a difference in Best's 10 point win.

At last...well, it wasn't that long. Jackson wins his 100th BRFL game. And he may have found a QB: Doug Flutie from Buffalo, who tossed two TDs. Jerry Rice, who has been in the NFL longer than the BRFL has been in existance, caught an early TD pass.

Barry, who could have made Calvin sweat a little had he started Terrell Owens, had another famine game in is feast or famine season. However, there have been enough "feasts" to qualify him for a playoff spot should the playoffs begin today despite the 2-6 record.

Ironically, both point playoff slots are currently occupied by 2-6 teams. Fair reward perhaps for Czupryna and Barry, who had three 40+ point losing efforts. CZ's 51 point outburst was the most by him this season. Jacksonville QB's had their first three TD game of the year, and Joey Galloway, quiet in recent weeks, had two long TDs.

Stroupe fell out of second in the West with his loss. Despite the fact that he is not currently tracked for the playoffs, Stroupe has the leading reciever and kicker in the BRFL with the Vikes' Cris Carter and Gary Anderson.

Same as it ever was, Talbot keeps dominating JK. The win came despite Steve Young notching his worst output of the season; however, if the worst is an 18 point game, then you are not doing too bad.

Despite the loss, and their second straight one at that, JK maintains a one game lead in the central. The reason is that the entire Central division lost for the second straight week.

Mosakowski-Hale wins for the second straight week to tie for the best record in the league and to lead with the most points in the league. Over the past 7 years, here are the point leaders after 8 weeks, and the eventual season result.
  • 394 Mosakowski-Hale 98
  • 345 Best 97...Lost in week 14
  • 356 Best 96 ...Lost in Week 17
  • 355 Deitrich 95... Lost in week 16
  • 355 Berger-Browell 94 ... Lost in week 17
  • 291 Montgomery 93 ... Lost in week 14
  • 332 Best 92 ... Lost in week 16
Things do not bode well for the Mo-ho despite the 49 point a game pace. They can shoot for the league record 47 ppg average turned in by Bud in 95.

Worth noting in defeat for Peil is the 63 yard field goal by Jason Elam. To re-answer the question, there is no "extra bonus points for long field goals", so the single bonus point is it. While the NFL record for longest field goal is Elam's and Tom Dempsey's in pre-BRFL 1970, the previous BRFL record was 61 yards set in 1991. Czupryna's Morten Andersen kicked it in week 9 in a loss to Wallace. So the silver lining for Peil is, after that loss in '91, CZ would reel off 13 straight wins including a Super Bowl title.

Week 9 Preview

In turning 39 this week, I'm one year away from my midlife crisis. One year away from having my baby picture in the paper like Calvin's when he hit 40. I feel old, but then I look at some of the QBs in the BRFL, and I doesn't not seem that old. For one there's Steve Deberg, who at 44 began his career ten seasons before the BRFL was founded. He started for the Falcons last week. He had been out of the NFL five years. I wonder, if in retirement, he had nightmares where he gets brutually sacked and picked clean of the ball. If he hadn't then, he will now.

Warren Moon, nearly 42, is seeing his share of nagging injuries, and his production is down as evidenced by Outlaw's four straight losses. However, Moon should not be blamed for being started on his bye week.

John Elway, 38, is has been a little nicked as well, but all he has to do, as Barry has discovered, is hand off to Terrell Davis. Run around a little and there goes the hammy.

A pair of 36 year old QBs, Vinny Testeverde and Randall Cunningham, signed on as back-ups but are now starters. Each is having the kind of season that is redeeming them for inconsistancies and squandered talent earlier in the their career.

There's Doug Flutie, imported from Canada. When the Buffalo QBs were claimed by Jackson, it marked the first time Flutie had ever made a BRFL roster. In his two previous stints, with Chicago and New England, he was unclaimed. (That was 86 and 89 - before our QB team rule.) Then there is Steve Young. at 37, he is scoring at least three TDs a week. However, he plays for Talbot. You know, typical Talbot, all QB, not much support cast, .500 record and the second highest scoring team in the league. That applies to this years 4-4 record as well as his up to the minute lifetime 62-62-2 record.

Like old Talbot, I reached .500 on my picks for the year, and then got a little giddy.. and suffered through a 1-5. Now it's 22-26. I won't pick anybody to upset Mos this week, but I think I will bet against Calvin again.

Wallace (4-4) vs Mosakowski-Hale (6-2) ..................... MOS by 13.5
Mos and Hale want the Maris Family on hand when they break the scoring record. However as we mentioned before, the scoring champ is never guaranteed success in this league. Mark McGwire broke the record and was seen in McDonalds commercials and not in the game during the World Series.

Terrell Davis might consider changing his name to Snow White. Because on Wallace's team, he's surrounded by seven dwarfs. Mos tends to bug Wallace at work about his success, so I think Bob took this week off for a reason. He'll probably need to take next week off too.

Best (6-2) vs Talbot (4-4) .................................. Talbot by 5
Every November they play an epic battle of NFC powerhouses. John Madden is there, because this game is too good for Monday night. This year it is San Francisco at Green Bay. By coincidence, the BRFL has a huge game dovetailing this matchup. Talbot vs Best: San Francisco QBS vs Green Bay QBs. This game has all the earmarks of a huge BRFL shootout. Neither team has a defense that can stop the pass, and that's all these offenses can do.

Since the QBs situation is a push, we must look for intangibles. I'm is 8-2 lifetime in week 9, the week my birthday falls in. That might be irrelevant for this year: In the last four weeks, I've not scored above my age. The winner of this game has not scored less than 40 since 1991.

My birthday will be well over by the time Talbot pulls this out on Monday night.

Jackson (6-2) Jones-Klingman (5-3) ....................... Jackson by 4
So far this season, these two teams have each had 6 QBs on their roster. Jackson might have settled on JK rejects Buffalo and Flutie, but how much longer will he avoid the disgrace of cutting the third pick in the BRFL draft. "I could have had both Rice and Young", moans Jackson. But don't beat yourself up, you are 6-2 and besides you can't hop in a time machine and go back to August 30th.

JK should make a trade with Jackson to reacquire longtime favorite kicker, Al Del Greco. How about those Oilers not be able to decide which kicker to use. It looked like a JK fantasy move - using the wrong kicker. However, don't think that having one of their roster this season simplifies things. They have been known to SR a kicker that scores less than their regular one, Norm Johnson.

Both guys have only moderate matchups. However, I think we need to be reminded again about the greatest of Barry Sanders. JK to win.

Czupryna (2-6) vs Barry (2-6) ...................... Pick 'em
Last year when Slug Boy walked off with the prize again. We got all upset about the playoff format again and re-vamped it. So, is this progress? If the playoffs started today, 2-6's Barry and CZ would be in, and plodders like Stroupe, Wallace, Bud and Peil would be out. I guess high scoring but unlucky 2-6 beats a ho-hum 4-4 team any day.

Last week, the Old Man showed he could post some numbers and trounced Stroupe thanks to the Jacksonville/Denver Shootout. Barry also had a QB stake in that shootout and only came away with one score. Denver isn't going to feel threatened, where as Jacksonville has been shook up. I think that helps Czupryna edge toward respectability win a big win.

Peil (3-5) vs Deitrich (3-5) ................................ Bud by 2
Deitrich raised an eyebrow over how outrageous the forum has gotten. The league he runs and dominates is probably tame by comparison. He doesn't have a forum, but if he had one, it might go like this:
  • "Bud, you win again, old sport. You have a vastly superior team" -Gillcoat
  • "I'm offering the Carolina and Washington coaches for a starting back or receiver such as TDavis or CCarter. It's two for one... Someone take it or I'll quit" - IC Gates.

In this game with Peil, I think Bud will feel like his other league - dominating the competition. DP's got some injury issues. Bud, should he go with Atlanta, might see a large number of points against a Ram team that blows off practice, stoplights and seems united only in the common goal of getting Dick Vermeil fired.

Outlaw (4-4) vs Stroupe (3-5) ................................. pick'em

At 39, I'm now the same age as Stroupe. He is to be commended. Instead of sitting on his butt watching Direct TV last Sunday, He's up in DC running the Marine Corp Marathon. This Sunday, he will be whipping my butt in golf. Go figure though: he never wants to walk, he always insists on a cart.

A four game slide and two consecutive faulty default line-ups has the league wondering about Outlaw. However, Wallace claimed to have had beers with him last Saturday night. That fact layed to rest two popular rumors: Outlaw has not skipped the country and he is not somewhere drying out.

Despite spending time with Wallace, his opponent last week, Outlaw never even bothered to give him a lineup. In fact, Bob claims, they were together three hours and never even discussed the BRFL. What? I can't even spend three hours with my wife without discussing the BRFL.

I think Outlaw should snap out of his slump: he has nobody on a bye week and his injuries are healing.
