1998 BRFL Week 09 Results |
Mo-Ho Walks the WalkThe Mosakowski half of the Mosakowski-Hale due was described as "unbearable" this season, bragging on how great his team is. However, if he didn't beat his mentor Wallace in week 9, then it was all for naught. Well, mission accomplished, but not without a little sweat and a little help from Wallace. 46 MOS MIN Q 12,

This game matched the league's top receiver Antonio Freeman and league's
top back Terrell Davis The difference between them, 16-14, was the
difference in this 46-44 game. How the teams got the the other 30 was
another story. Mos-Hale got their usual from Minnesota Qbs and
Robert Smith. Wallace got 23 garbage time
points from Charles Johnson. Johnson is one
those guys that has a monster week every season, but never while in a
BRFL starting line-up
due to inconsistancy. What motivated Wallace to pluck CJ
out of his grabbag of supporting players? Perhaps because Steeler fan
MOS had him last year never got a score out of him all season long.
Despite such inspired moments, Waldo did himself in again by trying to do too much. For this week, he brought back the Kansas City QBS on special reserve, and sat the Giants QBs, his nominal QB team. The Giants scored, the Chiefs did not. |

Jackson won game 101 and set up a showdown with fellow 7-2 MOS-Hale in week 10.
He took it easy on fading Jones-Klingman by leaving PIt QBs (31 points) and
Warrick Dunn (8) on the bench. Jackson is never afraid of benching
a first and third round pick - especially when he has two players he didn't draft
Buffalo (18) and Fred Taylor (15) going instead.
The loss drops 5-4 into a tie without Outlaw. It's been a rough 5 weeks for JK and Outlaw. After 4 weeks, they were 4-0 and on top of the league. They'll meet twice before the end of the season. |

Talbot moved to 5-4 thanks to his come from behind Monday night win over
Best. He needed of had to suffer through perhaps the worst Monday night
Football game of all time had he started Jake Reed or Reidel Anthony
instead of Mathis and the benched Michael Westbrook.
The loss ended Best's five game winning streak. Each of Best's three losses came after he was finished but winning going into a Sunday or Monday night game where his opponent was needing a score to win. |

Outlaw has returned and in style: Jamal Anderson scored 21 points to end
the four game free fall. Fortunately most of the divison was also AWOL
at the same time, and Outlaw finds himself tied for first.
The game will go into the books as a shootout, but it was well over by Monday when Stroupe's Dallas D scored 16 points. Stroupe would have had to have broken his own record for defensive points (30 with Denver in 97) to win. |

Credit Barry for being on the ball and catching the fact that Darnay Scott
was not going to play. So Sunday morning Ab made a last minute change.
In went a CZ favorite, Ben Coates. Coates scored 7, and AB insists he
didn't make the switch to get the old man's goat.
Despite the loss, which sends him to worst record in the league, 2-7, CZ is still hanging on the the last playoff spot. He leads Wallace in points 330-329. He will play Wallace twice down the stretch. |

Deitrich's wide receivers scored a total of two TD's all season. This week,
all three, Moore, Irvin and Martin, scored. Each team scored on a "combo"
TD, something that seems rare this year.
Peil leads the league in players in street clothes. So far this year, he's started Issac Bruce, Lamar Smith and now Adrian Murrell on weeks where they did not play. Next week, Terry Allen and Keenan McCardell could join them. |

Week 10 PreviewI lost my train of thought... remember that you can still Special Reserve two players each week, even though the bye weeks are over. It's a new rule this season since we reduced the roster size to 12. I know that will bother Wallace. He'd SR 7 guys to go with Terrell Davis if he could. We've really had some great weather this fall. Not the kind to be inside glued to the set waiting for the 10 minute ticker. Now that the leaves are falling, and you have to be outside, you can listen to the updates on radio. Grab a rake, strap on the headphones and tune in: ESPN GAMEDAY 620 AM Sunday 1-7. There are rotating hosts, but usually one of them is Merrill Hoge. Remember him, ex-Steeler, ex-Bear, he retired from football a few years back after getting too many concussions. I think he retired just in time. Sometimes he loses himself in the conversation and takes forever to make his point. They have field correspondants at the games who give you details on who scored. They don't recap the scoring at lot of times, so sometimes you'll miss scores unless you are listening all day. Every 20 minutes there is a Sportcenter (except at the top of the hour when WDNC does news). Don't rely on this guy, "Stash", for information, as sometimes he'll see a guy score on a monitor, and report it but get it wrong. Wait for the correspondants to confirm. The program drags after 4:00 as participants in the 1:00 games are interviewed. A dull coach interviewed by Merrill Hoge is downright tedious. One on One Sports 850 AM Sunday (times vary depending on the Redskins). This is clearly the better of the update programs. The hosts, Bob Berger and Bruce Murray are fantasy players, so their information is geared towards a fantasy perspective. Like ESPN, they have field correspondants, and you can get a recap of scoring. They have a 20/20 sports update as well (no news at the top of the hour). One on One will mix in a lot of radio calls from team announcers in their program while the game is going on. It is too bad the Redskins prempt these guys. These guys used to be on full time, and the Redskins would prempt ESPN. The Panthers 101.5 FMThere are two choices if you'd rather listen to a live game. The Panthers are probably the less interesting and less informative of the two. They will break in with "NFL scoreboard update" and "injury update", but they are sponsered, and not frequent. The scoreboard updates do not usually give scoring details, and if they do, I've known them to be wrong. The Redskins 850 AM Boy, do we have some bad teams on the radio here, but the Redskins are entertainingly bad. "Frank, Sonny and Sam" are hilarious when the Skins stink. They give NFL scoring updates, and they go back to the studio to a guy that will give scoring details. At halftime, they use radio calls from the other games to give updates. I love the guy from the Jets, Howard David... "Testaverde under center, takes the snap throws a fade pattern into the end zone...To KEYSHAWN JOHNSON. Touchdown Jets! KEYSHAWN JOHNSON!" (Of course it helps to have Keyshawn Johnson on your fantasy team). I was 4-2 last week to go to 26-28 for the season. |
Jackson (7-2) vs Mosakowski-Hale (7-2) .......................... MOS by 9 1/2 |
Best (6-3) Jones-Klingman (5-4) ............................... Best by 5 1/2 |
This week's undercard features these current second place teams. Two complete opposites. Best has a good QB, and no team. JK has a decent team, but no good QB. Both teams have been fading in recent weeks, but at least I have been winning lucky. I think this comes down to Monday night. Favre throws to someone other than Robert Brooks to pull it out. |
Wallace (4-5) vs Deitrich (4-5) ........................ Wallace by 5 1/2 |
Charles Johnson was the most added player on all of ESPN's fantasy leagues.
Wallace drafted him and started him last week when he scored 23 points.
Always ahead of the curve that Wallace.
Bud was so impressed that his 3 receivers each scored last week, that he decided to parlay that luck by starting 4 this week. However, if you average out his receiver performance of the course of the season, only one will score every other week. Terrell will do his thing and Wallace will win. Not that he cares what happens with Bud... he'll be too busy scoreboard watching. The best track for Wallace to make the playoffs will be as a points leader. So, he may be playing Bud, but he really cares what's up with AB and the old man. |
Czupryna (2-6) vs Outlaw (5-4) ................................... CZ by 2 |
Outlaw stepped into the cockpit and took his team out of its dive. He
he put it on autopilot and stepped back into first class. There he curled
with a book: "How to be a BRFL Champion" by Brian Ricker.
Sitting in coach, in a middle seat, is CZ. He may be 2-6, but he is headed to Disney World. The old man has a playoff spot... as long as he can hold off Wallace. Look for Joey Galloway to keep Moon covered, and Jamal Anderson to be bottled up by CZ's New England D. |
Peil (3-2) vs Talbot (4-5) ................................... Talbot by 16 |
I called Talbot right on the money last week with a Monday night comeback.
This week, he features the 49'ers, a little ticked off, at home versus the
woeful Panthers. Gulp. DP is very nicked up, but his Oakland QBs
visit Baltimore, who was so generous to Jacksonville last week. Despite
being 6-2, Oakland is no Jacksonville.
There has been one constant in this series: Talbot usually romps. I expect it to happen again. |
Barry (3-6) vs Stroupe (3-6) ..................................... Barry by 4 |
In other leagues, these guys would be playing out the string. But in the BRFL,
we have adopted a thing called "the points chase". Sounds like NASCAR as
opposed to fantasy football. The six teams not currently in first or
second in their divisions are in Points Chase:

Jackson (7-2) vs Mosakowski-Hale (7-2) .......................... MOS by 9 1/2 |
Here we are, clash of the titans...A Super Bowl preview. Mosakowski-Hale
has toned down their opponent bashing rhetoric and is very deferential to
Jackson. Calvin has become a BRFL icon with his 100th win and perhaps,
his most successful season ever. Jackson won it all way back in 1987.
No archives survive from back then, so we have to take his word for it.
In 1993, Jackson had his best regular season record, but at week 10, was
only beginning a four game surge that would take him to the top. That
was the week after he settled for a controversial tie with Bratcher for
making an improper player move.
Jackson is venerable, but is he vulnerable. Perhaps only if he screws around too much. With the addition of Doug Flutie, he has the best everyday lineup in the league. MO-HO has the "big three", but his lineup is a little frayed at the edges with nicked up Donnell Bennett and unproductive Irving Fryar and Derrick Alexander. I think for inspiration, I have to go back to CJ's last good year, 1996. It was right here in week 10 that Calvin edged MOS 58-53. I can see a little history repeating itself...Freeman dropping one on Monday night. |
Best (6-3) Jones-Klingman (5-4) ............................... Best by 5 1/2 |
