JK Takes Command in Central with Late Comeback

That Bledsoe deal had to work out sometime, and that sometime came late Monday night. Trailing Peil by 5, Bledsoe marched down the field and scored with 29 seconds left. The TD and the yardage gave JK a 33-32 win. The late JK score avoided a sweep of division leaders. In the West, Mos-Hale lost their second straight, as BUD and Adam Vinatieri kicked his way past them on Monday night. And never give the Old Man an opening on Monday night, he'll take it: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored with just over three minutes to go to give CZ a 37-36 shocker over division leading Jackson.

A typical Best/Wallace match-up. Hard fought, Best wins. He has won 13 of 18 meetings with one tie. Best 8-4 had solid days from Favre and Antowain Smith (13 points). The Vikes D scored and Keyshawn Johnson TD in the 4:00 game gave him enough of a cushion to withstand Wallace's assault in the later games. Best's record matches Jackson's, but Jackson leads on a tiebreaker by virtue of his win last week. Best and Jackson play again in week 14.

Wallace 4-7-1 was clicking on all cylinders. He special reserved Dallas QBs and Wade Richey which gave him 11 points more than his regular tandem. Fred Lane and Rod Smith scored and Terrell Davis had 8 points, but for some reason Denver chose to give TDs to someone other than TD when they were on the one twice in the fourth quarter. Davis scoring in either situation would have won the game for Wallace. However, it was good news for Wallace in that his 49 points puts him 7 ahead of CZ in the second points slot.

Years from now, when we are in the nursing homes reviewing the BRFL 3-D Holodeck, we will still be reading about the time Jackson sat down Jake Plummer and his five TDs and lost to CZ 37-36. The long term consequences are not known, but knowing Jackson's history, he usually pays heavily for that kind of mistake. Jackson 8-4 still leads the East Division by a tiebreaker.

Czupryna 3-8-1 continues to add to his reputation as a Monday night comeback artist. Kareem Abdul Jabbar scored late and the New England D got him a turnover for a one point win. It seemed CZ could do no wrong. He dropped Shawn Jefferson for Skip Hicks. They both scored. He switched Jimmy Smith for Gary Brown in his lineup, they both scored. However, they only think he did wrong was not score enough points. Wallace passed him in the points chase.

While Barry 4-7-1 is no threat to take the division, he is the current leader among teams looking to get in on points. The 63 he put up this week opened up a 23 point cushion over Wallace, who is second in line. Terrel Owens continued his tear. Barry has now started him enough to qualify as a BRFL Leader, but had be been started every week he would have been the leading receiver. Denver's QBS scored 18, and the Giants D recorded a shutout.

Outlaw 6-6 continues to slip. He started two players in street clothes. Perhaps he is testing a theory about team maintenance by going with a default lineup. "Professor Outlaw let a divison leader go to seed and missed the playoffs. Today we award him a Nobel Prize".

Peil 4-8 could have wo this game, but a freak play that only we in the BRFL can apprciate occured in the Denver/Oakland game. Denver's D almost got him one. In a play that proves that there is no synergy among BRFL teammates, Denver's Tyrone Braxton was goal line bound with an interception, when he was slowed by Peil's Donald Hollas, and tackled on the one by Peil's Tim Brown.

Jones/Klingman 7-5 continues to rule in division play, maintaining a perfect 4-0 and a one game lead over Outlaw. It was the second straight one point win and the second straight 33-32 win.

Talbot 7-4 has won his sixth straight and may be poised to take the West from Mos-Hale. This week he passes him in points scored, 546-545. As he usually does, Steve Young craves a little adversity. He fell behind 10-0 to New Orleans Sunday night and very quickly scored 4 TDs. The recovery allowed Talbot to make up a 14 point deficit to Stroupe. Talbot can't help leaving players (not QB teams) on his bench, in 12 weeks, he has left 96 points on his bench, including 19 from Michael Westbrook this week.

Stroupe 4-7-1 is doing some slight retooling for a run at a points slot (he trails Wallace by 21). He acquired Indy QBs, Tyrone Davis and Darick Holmes through a trade and claims. They netted him 19 this week. Among his discarded players, Wesley Walls and Billy Davis scored 18. Every point counts...

Mosakowski and Hale had a bad night. Not only did they have to miss Ally McBeal to wait out Deitrich's kicker, any hope they had of surviving was buried in the second half by a point barrage by Bud's Adam Vinatieri. Mo-Ha 8-4 has been slipping in division play, and face a Thanksgiving day rematch with powerful Talbot in week 13. There will be some concern where or not they can muster the points it took to beat him in week 2's 62-60 win.

Deitrich 6-6 finally had a good game from Priest Holmes, but it may be time to call in a priest to give Bud the last rights. His only hope is a complete collapse by Talbot, the league's hottest team, the final two weeks. Bud's 0-4 slow start has also doomed him in the points race, despite a 6-2 recovery.

Week 13 Preview

Just a quick update due to the short week. The turkey is cooking Barry Sanders is getting set to strut his stuff.

There have been several simularities between this year and the last time we played in division. One of these is a seemingly self destructive division leaded by Jones/Klingman. As you recall in 1992, JK lead the East division the entire season and blew at the end. It was Thanksgiving day when disaster struck. Stroupe scored 5 TDs in the first game, and JK was cooked before they had a chance to pass the cranberries. I think AB will take them out this week and set up a battle with Outlaw in week 14.

Outlaw, the "International Man of Mystery" will lose ground again this week, and allow improving Peil to play spoiler..

Ho-hum in the East with both playoff spots locked up. The real battle will be next week when Best and Jackson play for the divison, and Wallace and CZ fight for a points slot. These picks are based on history: Wallace to win, as usual against Jackson on his birthday and CZ to beat Best since every time these two have played more than once in a season, the result has been a sweep by one team (CZ won in week 2).

Among the teams not in first or second, BUD has the best record 6-6, but the worst chance to make the playoffs. For Bud to get in, it has to be as a second place team and he has to win twice and Talbot lose twice. Stroupe is improving and trails Wallace for the second points slot by 22 point. Stroupe should put the final nail in Bud's coffin.

Our game of the week featured Mosakowski-Hale vs Talbot. This is a rematch of the historic 62-60 Mos win in week 2. Like that week, MOS will have to wait out Talbot on Monday night when San Francisco plays the Giants. The won't have a 5TD cushion this time and Talbot, despite losing another starter to injury in Jake Reed, should win going away.

3-3 last week to deny me a chance to move aboue .500. Season Record 35-35-2.
