1998 BRFL Week 13 Results

MO-HA Wins the West Over Talbot: 75-64

The last couple weeks Mosakowski-Hale was doing a slow fade and seemed in danger of having their West division title slip away to red hot Talbot. Talbot had won six straight and even overtaken Mo-Ha for most points scored. Both teams came into week 13 with identical 8-4 records. Everything that Mo-Ha had achieved so far this season was in danger of being taken away by Talbot.

Mo-ha had beaten Talbot by the incredible score of 62-60 in week 2. Talbot's 60 was the highest losing score in BRFL history. Would this one be as wild?

Thursday started slow for MOS/Hale. Tommy Vardell failed to get any of his bunny TDs. Then in the MIN/DAl game, things got rolling. Mosakowski-Hale earned 27 points from Randall Cunningham on Thursday. Robert Smith was injured in the second quarter and did not score. Talbot's Cunningham/Smith combo did slightly better with 31, most of them at garbage time when Emmitt Smith tied the NFL all time rushing TD mark with his third score. The surprising total by Talbot caused some concern in the Mo-ha camp, since Thursday's totals should have been where they built a lead to hold off Talbot's Monday charge. Instead, they were behind with three players spent.

However, Sunday was a pleasant surprise, Marshall Faulk and Derrick Alexander scoring two TDs each. Faulk accumulating a fist full of bonus points. Talbot stayed close with TDs from Reidel Anthony, Terrance Mathis and Tampa's D. At the start of the 4:00 games, it was 57-51 MOS. Then late in 4:00 games, MOS built his cushion. Seattle's D, Todd Pedersen and Antonio Freeman scored 18 points combined, while Talbot only scored a single bonus point from Ricky Watters. That brought the lead to 75-52, a safe lead perhaps if you were facing anyone but Steve Young. It was Young that scored 4 on that week 2 Monday night and was twice denied a fifth on two other drives.

As has been their habit, the 49'ers fell behind on Monday, and by halftime, Young had two. Talbot was halfway there. In the third quarter, RB Terry Kirby got hot on a drive and took it in. It seemed that Young was trying too hard to hit Jerry Rice, who had been complaining about not getting the ball enough. Two fourth quarter drives resulted in a field goal and then a long Garrison Hearst TD run.

So Mo-Ha survived. However, the win was costly. Robert Smith (sprained knee) and Antonio Freeman (broken jaw) may be out for the next couple weeks. At this point, it looks like Mo-Ha will match up with CZ in week 15

Talbot's six game win streak was over. Incredibly, Talbot's 64 breaks his own record of highest ever losing score. Two 60 point games and two losses. As a second place team, Talbot will likely match up with the second place team in the East, most likely Best..

Despite scoring 52 points, Stroupe 5-7-1 made no headway in the points chase. He still remains 23 points out of the secong slot, now occupied by CZ. The switch to Indianapolis QBs has been productive for Stroupe, a net of 21 more points over Tennessee's totals.

Bud 6-7 lost this game, but won the battle of the Holmes: Priest out scored Stroupe's Darrick 13-2. Among the Martin's only Curtis was productive, scoring 14. Tony was shutout, but two on Bud's bench, Rob Moore and Leslie Shepard, scored and they earn a spot on the splinter squad.

When he had to have it Czupryna 4-8-1 got it. A huge week to put himself back in the driver's seat in the points race. The old man got an early boost from Jason Hanson (15 points on Thanksgiving) and Mark Brunell had a "statement game" with 4 TDs to make up for his poor week 12 performance. Eric Moulds, Jimmy Smith and Joey Galloway also joined the rout. CZ has to stay 23 points head of Stroupe and 20 ahead of his next opponent Wallace to secure an unlikely berth.

Best 8-5 has a playoff berth secured, but the loss deals a severe blow to his division championship plans. While he cruised through the non-divisional games, Best's opponents haveraged 29 points a game, but back in the division play the last three games, his opponents have averaged 60.

Barry 5-7-1 continues to hold a points slot and achieved his impressive total this week behind Denver QB's 24 points in the Sunday night game, but he had a stake in JK's success as Robert Edwards and Ben Coates caught TDs from JK's Bledsoe.

Jones Klingman 7-6 remained in top of the central despite the loss and the win by Outlaw. This sets up a week 14 clash with Outlaw for the division. Interestingly enough, they will likely play again in week 15.

International playboy, Outlaw 7-6 is getting better. Starters Ed McCaffery, and Herman Moore returned with scores this week. McCaffery going in twice. All-BRFL Jamal Anderson had another big week with 10 points. John Kitna replaced Warren Moon as a starter and threw two. However, it was the forgotten man, Irv Smith, that won the game for him Monday night with a second quarter TD. Garrison Hearst's late run added the icing.

Peil 5-8 had Keenan McCardell on the splinter squad last week, but not this week as he scored twice. Starting QB Jeff George made another attempt at a injury comeback this week, but was ineffective and will not play again this year.

Jackson got an early birthday present from Randy Moss, 25 points in the Thanksgiving. Moss had 3 catches, all for TDs greater than 50 yards. With that performance Jackson, could pretty much relax the rest of the weekend. The win virtually cliches the division for Calvin. He would have to lose to Best by 45 points or more next week to not claim the top spot in the East.

Wallace slipped out of a points slot with CZ putting up 61 points. Wallace would have to beat him by 20 next week to get into the playoffs. It was the first game all season that Terrell Davis failed to score any points.

Week 14 Preview

Week 14 used to mean something is this league. For five years it was a playoff game, a do or die week for most of the leagues teams. This year, its just another week. It's do or die for the four teams chasing the points slot so there will be some excitement. However, it will be hard pressed to match the excitement of week 13.

Last week was the highest scoring in BRFL history. Teams averaged nearly 52 points a game, shattering the long standing record set in week 2 1989 of 46 points a game. That week is the NFL's highest scoring week ever. We had games of 53-49 and 63-49 completely overlooked by the incredible 75-64 Mosakowski Talbot game. That game set the BRFL record for most points by two teams at 139, shattering the record of 128 set by Best and Barry in week 4 this season.

How successful was the BRFL's new format? In week 14, the last week of the regular season, 10 of 12 teams have a realistic chance to make the playoffs. Only Peil and Deitrich are considered out of it.

Although two of the three division champions have yet to be crowned, the six teams that will fill the slots for first and second have been known for some time. Therefore the playoff interest this week falls to the points slots. Right now here is how they stack up.

  1. 494 Barry 5-7-1 Tiebreaks: CZ
  2. 477 Czupryna 4-8-1 Tiebreaks: STP
  3. 457 Wallace 4-8-1 Tiebreaks: STP, BAR, CZ* (*week 14)
  4. 455 Stroupe 5-7-1 Tiebreaks:
  5. ...
  6. 433 Deitrich 6-7
Interestingly enough, all four teams with ties are the ones contending for the points slots. Should tie breakers have to be enforced, Wallace would have the best chance, and Stroupe the worst.

3-3 last week to stay at .500 38-38-2

Wallace (4-7-1) vs Czupryna (4-7-1) ............................... CZ by 1 1/2

Perhaps more than pride at stake in the battle of BRFL warhorses. For the last few week, these two teams have been shifting in and out of the second points slot. Last week, CZ flexed a little muscle and took a 20 point lead over Wallace. Wallace was handicapped by 0 points out of Terrell Davis. This week, Davis and Rod Smith face a rematch of that ugly game with the Chiefs, and its in Denver. It doesn't seem right that Wallace misses the playoffs. He is as ubiquitous to December and Santa Claus and mistletoe. I think that Wallace will win and cover the 20 he needs.

Jackson (9-4) vs Best (8-5) ...................................... Jackson by 4
This game is for the East Division championship (sort of). Jackson has a tie breaker and a 45 point cushion thanks to his 70-25 win over Best in week 11. However, winning the division for these teams is an afterthought. This is more like the Oh God, please please please don't let me play Talbot in the first round bowl. Best will win but won't cover the 45.
Jones/Klingman (7-6) vs Outlaw (7-6) ........................... Outlaw by 3
This game is for the Central division championship and the right to own a tie breaker when these two play again next week. Outlaw is still missing, but his team is back. Ed McCaffery and Herman Moore returned last week. Dorsey Levens and Derrick Mayes are supposed to see considerable playing time this week for the Packers. And how about that Irv Smith, a cigar store Indian of a starter if there ever was one, scored last week.

Jones-Klingman is very hands on this week. Making two transactions and SR'ing a QB team in Washington. However, hands off beats hands on, Outlaw to win the Central.

Peil 5-8 vs Barry 5-7-1 .................................... Barry by 8 1/2
Want a wild scenario? Stroupe and Barry both either win or lose, but Stroupe outscores Barry by 39 points, meaning that these two tie for a points slot. Stroupe and Barry tied in the regular season, and will finish with the same record. It then comes down to a coin flip. Barry better not send out Jerome Bettis for the toss.

Peil is one of two teams playing out the string this week with nothing at stake. Barry has some good match-ups and will win big and claim a points slot.

Dietrich (6-7) vs Talbot (8-5) .............................. Talbot by 14
Even a boaster like Mosakowski acknowledged that Talbot is the best team in the league. With vintage 1994 studs like Steve Young, Emmitt Smith and Natrone Means, Talbot is making a serious run at the championship.

Bud may be all but eliminated, but he achived a BRFL first last week. Adam Vinatieri became the first kicker to score something other than a field goal or a conversion when he ran in the two point conversion in the uncontested final play of the Buffalo / New England game.

Another opportunity for Bud to end his jinx against Talbot. Another opportunity lost. Talbot to tune up for his championship run.

Stroupe (5-7-1) vs Mosakowski-Hale (9-4) ........................ Mos by 13
Mo-Ha won the epic battle last week with division clinching 75-64 win over Talbot, but may have left a little on the battlefield as top back Robert Smith and top reciever, Antonio Freeman were injured. In fact, there may be some incentive to tank this game because with Talbot locked into a fifth place slot, Mo-Ha, as the top seed, may face him in week 16. Three epic battles with Talbot? Better lose this week and move over to the other side of the bracket that might be populated by three teams from the soft Central division.

Stroupe has been emerging, but finds himself 22 points out of a points slot. With Indy playing at Atlanta, Stroupe could shift back to Tennessee QBs (home against Baltimore) and hope that the Ravens are as generous to Steve McNair as they were to Peyton Manning. I like Stroupe to win while Mo-ha licks their wounds, but Stroupe's season ends here because he won't get the points.
