Five different works centered on vocal treatment serve properly to introduce the figure of Luis de Pablo, a 1930 Bilbao-born, and one of the more recognized and contrasted figures in the spanish musical scene nowadays. Composer of appreciable film scores (among them the terrific 1966' La Caza), De Pablo shows on each and everyone of his works a superb handling of all kind of musical resources, both in structure as well in timbre. In the five scores here presented, which comes from a period of thirty five years, it may observed all his best qualities, from the earlier Comentarios (1959) on Gerardo Diego's poems, the assorted cycle Pocket Zarzuela (1978), over José Miguel Ullán's texts, for mezzosopran and five instruments (where it stand out the second poem, Anochecía, the best one in the cycle), the long Sonido de la guerra (1980) over Vicente Aleixandre, with its balanced use of voices and instrumental group, the relaxed El manantial (1982) over Jorge Guillén, till the recent Cape Cod (1994) over english text from George Santayana, for six a capella voices. The correct performances make justice to De Pablo's music, if well the dullness in the recording of El manantial does not help anything to the understanding of the work.
