Alan Silvestri: YOUNG GUNS II / MAC AND ME

Enoughly knowed and recognized actually, Alan Silvestri has been composing for the movies since 1972, but it had to wait till the popular outburst of Back to the Future (1985) and Predator (1987), to reach the higher levels of popularity and prestige. Now he compose for the majors and their biggest projects, like in Eraser (1996), Volcano (1997), or the very recient Contact, but in the path stayed a series of interesting scores which claimed for a place in the heart of fans. Two of them has been joined on this "promo" record, of superb sound, together a small suite from one of his more forgotten scores, American Anthem (1986), an absolutely forgettable film make for the glory of the, on that time popular, olympic athlete Mitch Gaylord. Very different one from the other, as expected due the huge separation of genres, Mac and Me (1988) and Young Guns II (1990) are, on the other side, two unmistakable works of their author, and include Silvestri's more usual musical gestures: tense symphonic movements of increasing intensity and obsesive rhythm, flowing tunes of american roots, as well a certain tendency to assimilate details from other composers, integrating them with elegance on the upcoming of his music. Mac and Me, a sort of second-rate E.T., has a very emotive and symphonic music, very similar to one of his still unpublished works from that days, My Stepmother Is An Alien (1988); on the opposite side, Young Guns II tries a more actual and popular close-up, with a curious and well-done mixed utilization of symphonic and electronic elements, at the taste of a movie who tried to conciliate the classic western with the youth of the moment.
