As the years passed and the tastes are changed and transformed, the Genial always stand, doesn't matter the fashions and manners. To the permanent revitalization of the Classics, to the recovery of forgotten or lost scores, adds itself an each time more numerous edition of the original masters, many of which has always been consider as impossible or unaccesible. As a perfect token, this double-CD which join, in an absolutely anonimous edition, material of surprisingly good quality of sound (in view of the original age of the recordings) centered, almost exclusively, on the figure of Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
The first CD includes the more available quantity of the original recordings of three of the best Korngold works. Specially relevant, due its till now scarce recordings, are the scores for Juarez (1939) -which even includes the songs heared during the movie-, and most of all the incredible The Sea Wolf (1937), one of the greatest and unknown film scores of the austrian-american composer. About The Prince and The Pauper (1937) we already had reviewed the stupendous and complete reconstruction published on the 100 Years of Film Music 1895-1995 collection, which comes with more material than here, but to be able to hear the terrific orchestral pulse of Korngold (although not mentioned in the CD, the original Korngold recordings were conducted by the composer himself) is a good point in favour of the present record. For the second CD it is reserved a practically complete edition of the spectacular material for Captain Blood (1935), the first big Korngold film score, whose absolute interest and necessity is not damaged by the logical poor sound. As a colophon, part of Victor Young's material for the brilliant Scaramouche (1952) is included, in more quantity than the offered in the recent reconstruction of the Marco Polo label, which it seems a little bit out of place along the Korngold music (any other of his scores will be welcomed), but due its inner quality it is always good to be able to enjoy it.
