The world of the fantasy and the legends is not detached from the filmography of Trevor Jones, the composer of southadrican origin that began his cinematographic career with two movies of this style: Excalibur (1981), the John Boorman film on the legend of the King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and The Dark Crystal (1982), an animate fantasy of Jim Henson that contained a superb symphonic score, very recognized in its moment. Since then, Jones has delivered an assorted collection of works, for the cinema as well as for the television, that show him as an author of great level, of solid and various style. Precisely for the television media is his last score, Merlin, with which he returns to the world of magic and legends of King Arthur, recovering an excellent symphonic pulse that was seeming a little bit lost in several of his last works -see G.I.Jane (1997), or the sinister Dark City (1998)-, and using in an exquisite way medieval modal gestures together with counted electronic elements perfectly integrated in the becoming of the work. The very long Age of Magic (about fifteen minutes) that opens the disk designs all this perfectly, but the rest of the cues maintain a highest level until the glorious final of In Search of the Grail. Very recomendable. A.L.
