Takashi Kako: THE QUARRY

The flow of oriental composers with European influences seems to have been increased in the last years, maybe due to the unavoidable cultural sincretism that takes place in the compositions from these and that it works perfectly with certain aesthetic tendencies; the cinema, once again, is not unaware to it and besides the already well-known Ryuichi Sakamoto, we can mention the chinese Tan Dun and its magnificent score for Fallen(1998). Now it is the japanese in origin, although French of musical education, Takashi Kako the one that responds again to the call of Belgian director Marion Hänsen after their previous collaboration in Sur la terre comme au ciel (1992), for this dramatic history set in Southafrica. His music, full with certain minimalist touches and fill up with mysticism, became a little bit disperse and arid to its listening, evidently on-line with the spirit of the film, reflecting in the low registrations of an appropriate instrumental group to such an effect (cellos, contrabasses, viola, as well as some ethnic instruments). Their brevity helps, however, so its audition is not endless. M.A.F.
