The duties and responsibilities of the Chairman include the following:
- Serve on the Board of Directors.
- Act as President in the absence of the President of the Congregation.
- Preside over all Committee meetings and be responsible for preparation of the meeting agenda and an accurate recording of the proceedings.
The duties of the Committee of Elders include the following:
- Pray for the Pastor and other spiritual leaders. Be concerned about the spiritual, emotional and physical health and welfare of the Pastor and his family.
- Assist the Pastor in assuring the general spiritual welfare of the congregation, and in difficult problems of the ministry, seeing to it that congregational discipline is carried out according to the dictates of scripture. (Matthew 18:15-20).
- By faithful example and encouragement, stimulate a high level of spirituality within the congregation, including a systematic program of calling to encourage those who have been negligent in their use of the Word and Sacraments. When warranted, recommend appropriate action.
- Assist the Pastor in the cultivation of a constant spirit of harmony among the members.
- Conduct New Member Orientation Meetings as appropriate and facilitate the assimilation of these new members into the congregation.
- Recommend to the Church Council all those who have applied for membership.
- When feasible, visit those who have requested release from the congregation.
- Work with the Pastor to make the services of worship as meaningful as possible.
- Appoint and advise the head usher; receive reports and recommendations from him.
- Oversee the music program of the church. Annually appoint the head organist and choir director.
- Oversee the activities and provide for the expenses of the Altar Guild.
- Provide necessary administrative assistance to the church office.
- Greet and assist guest pastors and assure that they receive their stipend.
- Appoint and train individuals to assist with the distribution of Holy Communion.
- Oversee a child care program during the worship services.
- Review requests from the needy for assistance.
- Act in liaison capacity between the Pastor and the Committee of Property and Supplies on issues relating to the maintenance of, or improvements to the parsonage.
