Subject: Philip and Catharine Bucklew

Hi Les, Yes it is okay to put in the info on Philip and Catharine Bucklew.

My information on this family orginally came from:
Abram Yost in his book "The Descendants of William and Emily Bucklew"
states that William Bucklew was a minister with the Old Order German Baptist
Church. He also states that William told his grandson, Albertus, that three
of his (William's) uncles made a home-made raft, went down the river, never
to be heard of again.

Yost, whose wife, Treva Mae, is the daughter of Mary Catherine (Bucklew) and
her second husband, Robert Wolford, states: Mary Catherine married twice,
first to George Bucklew, a cousin, and near enough, that her father, William
Bucklew, would not marry her. However, Yost did not give me the connection
between George and Mary Catherine. Sorry, I don't have George's father.

22 Sep 98, from Robert C. Bowman: ...you quote Virginia Bucklew who got
information from Abram Yost. I was in college with Yost's son and, until his
death, the father and I had happy correspondence over the years about Bucklew
connections. I have a copy of the mimeographed book he put together on the
family of William (332) and Emily Sharps.

First, Yost always spells William's wife Emily's name as Sharps, not
Sharp. She was the daughter of John and Susannah McGee Sharps. She was born
2 April 1827.

According to James E. Bucklew: William was a Dunkard preacher. He farmed in IL. and later returned to Morgantown, WV.

1850 census Preston Co 1164-1164 William Buckaloo 22 Va Farmer, Emily 21 Va, Mary K. 5/12 Va.

1860 census Preston Co 801-801 Wm. Buckelew 33 Va minister German Baptist, Emily 31 Va, Mary 10 Va, Sarah J. 7 Va, Marcellus 5 Va.

On 19 April 1848 when William Carl was 21, he married Emily Sharps, daughter of John Sharps & Susannah McGee, in Preston Co., WV. Born on 2 April 1827 in (W)V. Emily died on 23 November 1907; she was 80. Buried in Warner Cem., near Brookville, OH.

They had the following children:
930 i. Mary Catharine (1850-)
931 ii. Sarah Jane (1853-1885)
932 iii. Marcellus (1855-)
933 iv. Silas (1862-)
934 v. Martha Ellen (1865-)

393. Nancy Buckalew. Born in 1828 in (W)V. Buried in Terra Alta Cem., Terra Alta, Preston Co., WV.

22 Sep 1998, from Robert C. Bowman: ...Nancy Bucklew married Hiram Freeland. Her great-granddaughter wrote that they had ten children, six of whom lived to maturity. You have
only four on your page and her grandfather, Philip is not among them. Philip Freeland would make five. I don't know the elusive sixth.

FROM DOLORES TEETS PETTY 4 FEB 2002:

...I do not have the same information that you have for Rachel Freeland. I will try to explain to you what I do have. The Family Bible has Grandma's sister Rachel Freeland Braham Born June 13, 1869 Died January 22, 1958. Hazel King Braham told me that Rachel was married 2 or 3 times and that her 1st husband was Uncle Nick Braham and he had a brother by the name of Bill and that Rachelís name was Hardesty when she died. In the article, West Virginia, Old and New published in 1923, The American Historical Society Inc., Chicago and New York, Volume III pg 372 Eugene Bucklew of Terra Alta states "Rachel, wife of Nicholas"
This is in context with her siblings and their mates.

Dolores Bucklew has, and I believe correctly so, George as George W., and says of him: "George was a minister by 1874, being first listed that year in the national roster of Brethren ministers. Following the Conservative-Progressive dissension, George united with the Progressive Brethren branch and was one of the charter members of that new fellowship. He was one of the first ministers of the Whitedale Brethren Church, which was formed around 1895." Dolores references "Allegheny Passage" by Emmert F. Bittinger.

Subject: Bucklew question
From: Melinda M Wofford <mendylou@juno.com>

Hi Les,

I recently received all family photos from my mother... Among all those
albums I found my eldest brother's babybook. The family tree page was
filled in quite nicely and I did get some leads on maiden names. However
I also got a bit confused. I've always thought that my Bucklew line was
from George M. Bucklew and Margaret Hardesty. According to this book
(which my mother says could be wrong she doesn't remember where the info
came from) this couples names were George Washington Bucklew and Margaret
Hardesty. There is also a notation that Margaret's mother's maiden name
was Carmondy This could also be Carmody as I have seen both spellings on
the backs of old photo's). The birthplaces were not filled out but they
have a daughter named Margaret Luretta Bucklew (my gr-grandmother). I've
gone through the 1999 edition of the big blue bucklew book I purchased
from you and can't find a George that seems to fit this. I was hoping you
could shed a little light on this bit of confusion. If this lead turns
out to be correct then you'll have to change your database too as I sent
you my line some time ago. And no, I don't have any documentation to
prove or disprove any of this as I haven't even gotten my hands on
Margaret Luretta's vital records yet (I've been persuing a different line
for several months)...

Mendy

On 18 February 1858 when George Washington / M.(?) was 21, he married Margaret Hardesty, daughter of Joshua W. Hardesty (1811-1875) & Elizabeth Freeland (1815-1892), in Preston Co., (W)V. Born on 23 December 1839 in Preston Co., (W)VA. Margaret died on 5 March 1911; she was 71.

22 Sep 1998, from Robert C. Bowman: I have a transcript of the obituary of hiswife, Margaret Hardesty Bucklew originally printed in the "Journal" from Kingwood, WV, on 16 Mar 1911. Margaret was born 23 Dec 1839 and died 5 Mar 1911. She and George Bucklew were married in 1858. The obituary goes on to say: "To that union were born ten children, five boys and five girls. Two boys and two girls have preceded her in death." Then the obituary lists the six surviving children which are, I believe, the same as you have on the Web Site, although the spelling is sometimes different. I will give the obituary information but with the Web Site order and numbering:
766 Mrs. Malinda (W.W. ) Hewitt of North Dakota
767 Elias S. Bucklew of near Terra Alta, W. Va.
768 George H. Bucklew of Kingwood
769 Rettie, wife of Lloyd Wilson of Rowlesburg, W. Va.
770 Jennie, wife of C.H. Freeland of Terra Alta, W. Va
771 C.W. Bucklew of Clayton, Ohio

They had the following children:
964 i. Mary E. (1859-1863)
965 ii. Surrinda (1860-1863)
966 iii. John W. (1863-1863)
967 iv. Malinda E. (1864-1933)
968 v. Elias S. (1868-1935)
969 vi. George H. (1869-1939)
970 vii. Margaret Luretta (1872-1938)
971 viii. Sarah Virginia (1876-1945)
972 ix. Charles Walter (1878-1937)
973 x. Albert B. (1880-1898)

398. Solomon H. Buckalew. Born on 25 August 1840 in MD Or Preston Co., WV (?). Solomon H. died in Morgantown, WV, on 18 February 1926; he was 85. Buried in Markleysburg, PA (on rd to Brandonville). Occupation: Preacher/Farmer/Blacksmith.

Born in MD per 1850 census and in VA [(W)V] per 1860 & 1870 census reports.

From R.C. Bowman, 21 Sep 1998: "My Solomon was a rather well known figure in our tiny denomination, the Church of the Brethren. He often spoke at our annual conferences in the days
before electronic amplification. My impression is that he was asked to speak
not because of the content of his sermons as much as because his was one of
the few voices that would carry to the 9 or 10 thousand people in attendance.
He spoke at Roann, Indiana, where his daughter lived around 1920. He was
past his prime at that time but folks in town asked who was preaching at the
Dunker church because they could hear him all over Roann. Mom says his voice
was so resonant that she remembers the window panes rattling as he spoke.
Solomon had been a blacksmith in his younger days and he had a powerful
physique. I was told that once in Canton, Illinois, he lifted a farm wagon
single handedly to free a farmer pinned beneath."

James E. Bucklew has Solomon's names spelled as Soloman and his birth month as September. Also, says "Soloman was a Dunkard preacher. He farmed a portion of Briery Mountain which was later known as the Alex McDonald Place.

On 16 January 1862 when Solomon H. was 21, he first married Elizabeth Strawser, daughter of Jacob Strawser & Elizabeth Forney, in IL.

They had the following children:
974 i. Matthias (1863-1951)
975 ii. Mary Annie (1865-1948)
976 iii. Susan L. (~1867-)
977 iv. Samuel Judkins (~1870-)

On 6 February 1914 when Solomon H. was 73, he second married Mrs. Mary C. Sterner.

399. Mary E. Buckalew. Born on 2 July 1843 in (W)VA. Mary E. died in Bear Creek, Jefferson Twp, Montgomery Co., OH, on 12 July 1888; she was 45.

Born MD per 1850 census and VA [(W)V] per 1860 & 1870 census reports.

Wedding to James A. Ridenour performed by Elder William Bucklew. (From family Bible)

Les' note: There's obvious confusion about Mary E. Bucklew's two marriages. It appears that James Ridenour lived longer than Mary E., and there's no evidence of termination of their marriage. This would indicate that James Ridenour was Mary's second (?) husband.

Louisa was the daughter of Mary Bucklew before marriage. She was born in Preston Co., (W)VA 23 Dec 1858 (birth record). The birth was reported by the child's grandfather [great grandfather?], Wm Buckalew. Mary was probably the daughter of Anna and granddaughter of William Baldwin Bucklew. Anna was a domestic. It is unclear to me if she was a daughter of William B. or or his wife or hired help. If the latter, did William have children by her or did he accept her children as his since he was raising them?

There seems to be some confusion here between two Mary Bucklews--Mary, daughter of Anna, and Mary E., daughter of Philip. Mary, daughter of Anna, is probably the Mary who married David Shaffer as this Mary was the mother of Louisa (apparently by Samuel DeWitt). This Mary was 16 in 1860 and Mary, wife of David Shaffer, was 25 in 1870 and 35 in 1880. Mary E., daughter of Philip, was probably only married once and that was to James A. Ridenour. She was born in 1843 and was 27 in the 1870 census. More research is needed.

On 12 September 1861 when Mary E. was 18, she married Rev. James A. Ridenour, son of Jacob Ridenour (4 February 1815-) & Mary E. Braham, in Portland Twp, Preston Co., WV. Born on 12 July 1840 in Grant Dist., Portland Twp, Preston Co., (W)VA. James A. died in Montgomery Co., OH, on 17 March 1925; he was 84.
