Numbering notes

Initially CUMTD buses were numbered for seating capacity, thus the 45 passenger buses were in the 4500s and the 36 passenger buses in the 3600s.

In 1979, when 53 passenger buses joined the fleet they were numbered in the 5300s but the last two digits were selected to be unique in the fleet, the 3600s being long gone.

When the campus bus operation was started, non-lift equipped buses were numbered in the 500 series. Seperate accessible service is provided on campus by the University. The articulateds retained their Louisville 400 series numbers.

Paratransit buses were numbered in the (P)100 series.

Starting with the ex-NJT buses, and the 1996 Flyers, new acquisitions were numbered in a 4-digit year-based bus number system. The 1993 Flyers are numbered 3775-3789 (supposedly numbered for the number of seats, but there are actually 36 seats), while the newer ones are numbered 9656-9672 and 9716-9724. The two low-order digits are selected to try to eliminate or at least minimize overlap with any other operational buses -- in other words, all operating buses with 4-digit bus numbers can be referenced just by the two low-order digits with little or no ambiguity. So when they get new buses, they often "fill in the holes" in the 2-digit numbers. Makes for a funny looking number list and requires some renumbering of older buses to keep blocks of new buses together!


Historical Collection

Dr. Friedman writes (E mails, 3/98) that an historical collection is being preserved:
"A historical collection has been designated. Of course CUCL 2880 is in it, and also 1980 Flxible 4328 and 1971 GMC 515 (ex 4515). 4328 is in pretty good shape, having been resurrected in 12/95 and used only until 8/97. 515 is to be restored as a "when we can work on it" project. I don't know whether they will renumber it back to 4515. I would guess that we won't know that until the day they roll it out as completed, and that won't be for a while! Ex-Richmond bus 548 is a candidate for the historical collection, but no decision has been made yet. I'm not aware of its condition.
