SPORT> The weather was dull but the spirits were high as staff and students set off for West Brom on Monday 28th April. With the college ion the final of the ESFA U19 Cup, I travelled down to The Hawthorns with Michael Murphy and sport teacher Ursula Pennington. Fortunately, the IRA chose not to disrupt our journey.

The stadium was very impressive - three of the four stands were relatively new, and overall the stadium could seat 25,000. We made our way past the tunnel as the CNC team were coming out for a pre-match warm-up. One of the players asked me how I was. "I'm alright," I told him. I lied. I was really nervous and tense. We went to the snack shop, where Mike asked me if I wanted anything. I felt incapable of eating. It's a good job I wasn't playing!
The banners were unrolled and the trumpet started playing as the atmosphere built up. Richard Varey led the support early on, but was later beaten to the best cheer-leader award by Fr Mike and his cheers of "come on, Newman," in the second half. The best analysis award went to Tom Cahill. "There's going to be a goal now," he predicted as CNC prepared to take the free kick. He was right.
After the victorious scenes and the presentations we headed for home. Mike and I talked football over supper, both of us delighted with the result. I phoned the result through to the ENN office in York and headed to bed. The General Election was just three days away. If the football had been anything to go on, it was going to be a good week.
