NEWS> William Hague, elected last week as leader of the Conservative Party, has written to ENN to thank us for supporting his leadership campaign. In his letter, he thanked us for our support, and said our help in reorganising the party would be "sorely needed". ENN wrote to all six contenders, telling them that they were the only man for the job, and told them to offer a shadow cabinet post to Fylde MP, Michael Jack, and wished them "the best of British luck." We also received replies from John Redwood, Peter Lilley and Kenneth Clarke.
Meanwhile, in a dramatic development, it emerged that an ex-boyfriend of Cheryl Walton stood as a parliamentary candidate in Hull West and Hessle. ENN was unaware that Cheryl's ‘ex', Mr. Richard Bate, intended to run for Parliament when we originally reported the relationship in Issue 5 (see below). Mr. Bate, who stood for the Referendum Party, received 1,416 votes - a 4.16% share of the vote, meaning that he lost his deposit. A Lancaster University lecturer stood as a Green Party PPC in Lancaster and Wyre. The candidate, Dr. Jon Barry was teaching ENN Editor Andrew Allman at the time.
