COMMENT> Perhaps one of the most significant acts of the early Thatcher administration was the restrictions placed on workers over strikes. Since then there has been little appetite in the country for demonstrations and protests - unlike in the rest of Europe. The ongoing dispute involving French lorry drivers is an obvious example. Every now and again, however, people do decide that a petition and a letter to the local MP is not enough, and more must be done. Recent examples include the Poll Tax riots, the farmers' protests and the pro and anti-hunt demonstrations. Clearly, CNC's protest is not on the same scale, but has had some impact. The demo received coverage on radio stations Red Rose 999 and Rock FM, and featured in the day's Lancashire Evening Post. Would a letter to Audrey Wise have got such coverage?
These proposals are the latest in a series of education, education, education cutbacks, and pose a threat to both CNC and the Catholic education system generally, as well as being unfair on students. The college and its students are right to fight them.
