CNC Logo County Council votes to accept cuts

NEWS> Lancashire County Council has voted to end the awarding of bus passes to sixth form students in a move which could have serious repercussions for CNC. The vote, which was passed by approximately 2:1, means that many students will face a bill in excess of £700 per year to travel to the college.

The college principal, Kevin Quigley, wrote to parents twice last month urging them to write to councillors and MPs protesting about the proposed cutbacks. The County Council argued that if the travel assistance was to continue, money would have to be taken from other school budgets, and that their responsibility was first and foremost the maintenance of primary and secondary education. The college's budget is largely the responsibility of the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC), which is generally less supportive of denominational colleges than the County Council. The latest vote means that the changes will almost certainly go through. The effect on the number of students will not be clear until the September ‘99 intake.
