COMMENT> I sat through most of the match with a number of teachers, including Mr. Finnerty. Although not famed for his love of sport, Mr. F has been a most loyal fas of the college's football team for some time.

Mr. Finnerty was critical of the pitch, describing it as slippery and ‘litter-strewn'. "I hope you've noted that," he told me. I got out my notebook.

It has been said that "any praise from Anthony is high praise indeed." With this in mind we noted Mr. F's constant praise of the CNC goalkeeper, Kevin Holliday. Kevin's performance in the final was faultless and outstanding. Perhaps one indication of the quality of his performance and the quality of the defence in general was that the team recorded five ‘clean sheets' from the nine matches they played in the competition.

Finally, a word about the crowd. Despite the low police presence, crowd trouble was minimal. The CNC crowd really made a difference, ably lead by chief cheer-leader Fr Mike. After the match, the Colchester crowd chanted the surname of each of their players as they received the runners-up medals. The last player to go up was called Mark Newman. For some reason, they went quiet.
