Russia to Deliver Fighter to Ethiopia

Itar-Tass, 18-JAN-99

MOSCOW, January 18 (Itar-Tass) - Promexport, a Russian federal export company, will send to Ethiopia a used Su-27 fighter to replace a crashed aircraft, a military-industrial complex official told Tass on Monday.

The jet will replace an aeroplane which crashed over Debre Zeyit airport near Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa during a post- assembly technical flight on January 6.

With the delivery of the Soviet Union-27, the contract on the purchase of eight fighters will be fulfilled.

The pilot of the crashed Su-27 parachuted to safety due to the secure performance of the K-36 ejection seat created by design bureau Zvezda outside Moscow.

"Every cloud has a silver lining. The accident showed Ethiopia's air force commanders and pilots that the Russian salvation system used on combat aircraft is reliable," another military-industrial complex official said.
