Tekezie Dam Project Study Completed

ADDIS ABABA, July 7 (WIC) - A senior engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources disclosed the completion of a study that would facilitate the execution of the Tekezie Dam Project. The engineer, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed told the Tigrigna weekly Woyen that tender processes have begun for launching practical activities following the finalization of elaborate project studies.

The engineer explained that the 187 metres high Tekezie Dam, which has a holding capacity of seven billion cubic litres of water, has a power generating capacity of 300 mega watt. Indicating that the Tekezie Dam may face the danger of being sitled up to half only after 50 years, Dr. Mohammed said an estimated quarter of a million dollars is needed for executing this project.

Dr. Mohammed said the geophysical and excavation work is done by a South African Company called Rado. Meanwhile, construction of a 40 kms. road in the locality of the Tekezie Dam has been underway following the completion of all tender formalities, it was learnt.



Metema - Galabat Road Opens to Traffic

ADDIS ABABA, July 7 (WIC) - The first of the three roads connecting Ethiopia with the Sudan has been opened for traffic, the Federal Road and Transport Authority said.

Authority General Manager Ato Kassahun Hailemariam said the connection was made possible through the partially renovated 185-kms. Azezo-Metema-Galabat all weather road. Trucks have already started moving relief food and agricultural commodities between the two countries, Ato Kassahun said.

The remaining two roads, which connect Ethiopia with the Sudan, are to begin providing service soon after renovation is completed.

The opening of the road, the general manager said, is set to bolster the relationship between the two countries. Work on the remaining 70 kms of the 185 kms road is going on. It is being carried out by a local contractor, it was learnt



Saba Marble Company Begins Production At Full Capacity

AXUM, July 7 (WIC) - The Saba Marble Share Company of Western Tigray zone whose assets valued at over 17-million Birr had been robbed by the Eritrean regime has now begun operation starting full-scale production activities.

Company manager Ato Solomon Desta told WIC that the company whose assets had been robbed two years ago has installed its reserve machineries and began to produce at full capacity. Ato Solomon said the company has produced over 80 per cent of the targeted 2,200 cubic meters of marble at its production sites in three localities of Western Tigray zone.

Noting that the company's products have a high demand on the local market, Ato Solomon said the company is also planning to export its products to countries of the Middle East and Europe next year. Established in 1987 (E.C) and owning a capital of over 50 million Birr, the Saba Marble Share Company employs over 200 permanent and temporary works.
