Commentary: The Assab Issue!by T.D., July 28, 2000Mr. Kibralem's annoying commentary "Motion for Endless War, Why? The Issue of Assab & Nationalism" is a repeated version of Mr. Meles's (The PM) statement on the Assab issue. Mr. Zeru Kihishen and Belay Abay should not be insulted this way for their idea (outstanding article about the issue of Assab). Their concerns are shared by all Ethiopians. The issue of Assab, if mishandled will be the downfall of the TPLF regime. I saw it again and again (on a video), the short briefing of the PM of Ethiopia Mr. Meles Zenawi to the African diplomats in Addis Ababa about the war with Eritrea May, 2000. He declared confidently Assab belongs to Eritrea. His statement is against facts, history, the wishes of the Afar people and the national interest of Ethiopia. Leadership is about vision and far sightedness, it is about reading the hearts and the minds of the people, above all it is about understanding "the national interest" of one's own country. A leader, who lacks those qualities, will fail his country and people. To him Ethiopia does not need its own port. Lots of alternatives! Sudan, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya announced a confident PM. Port Sudan belongs to Sudan means it serves only the interest of Sudan. In the event of a war or conflict with another neighboring country (which will happen soon given the history of Horn of Africa) Sudan will quickly turn its back, especially if the invader is a Muslim country. So is the rest of neighboring countries. Egypt's intention is clear for all who follow the situation in East Africa. Eritrea is not dead, a leader and a society who worship a gun and willing to fight everywhere with Arabs and European money, they are going to be a source of instability in the Horn in the future. You can't count on foreign ports. If a PM of Ethiopia could not see that far who will? His reason is that we can't afford fighting another war because of a port. It is the contrary, there will be no peace unless Assab is re-united with Ethiopia. |
