Viewpoints: Letter to Reuters and BBCBy M.R.; Friday, March 19, 1999Dear Reuters Editors: If there is any word that is close to describing the upheaval embodied in the Ethiopia-Eritrea War, then it is CATACLYSM. No other credible news agency would know better than you the Nairobi-based Media personnel of Reuters that what has already erupted in Ethiopia following the unprovoked aggression of Eritrea is what political activists choose to call a REVOLUTION, or the Moslem brethren would name "JIHAD" upon witnessing the intensity with which Ethiopians have committed themselves to deal with the dangerous brand of militarism and lawlessness that has afflicted Eritrea. CATACLYSM is reigning supreme on the battle field, and Africa's mad state has continued to stage mock victories to the media - just as it did until its army was routed at Badme, and Issaias Afewerki was forced to wave the white flag over a long-standing Organization of African Unity (OAU) Peace Plan whose efficacy had already phased out with the start of the war on February 6. Eritrea's surprise invasion of Ethiopia has come as a blessing in disguise for the about 60 million Ethiopians, who now stand as one man in defense of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their Motherland. While Ethiopia's victory over the vestigial colonial outpost of Italy is as surely as the outcome of Operation Sunset, the role some mercenaries play under the cover of working for authentic media outlets is becoming a matter of serious concern. The degree of disinformation campaign being hotly pursued by no one other than the usual Asmara-based Reuters correspondent Alexander Last is but what we would like you to give it a serious consideration. It is not that we are protesting why Alexander Last is a journalist, it is why he is allowed to use the Reuters by-line while actually he is a propaganda worker for the dictatorial regime of Isaias Afewerki. After having been stunned like his Asmara bosses following the ignominious defeat of the Eritrean army at Badme, Last has once again reared his ugly head and started to spit his venom like a serpent wriggling from the heat of a sun- scorched rock. One example. In his March 16 report for the BBC, Alexander sprinkles his usual venom at us by saying, "The Eritrean soldiers were in jubilant mood, relaxing by the trenches, despite the small tissues stuffed up their noses to block the smell of the Ethiopian corpses." (Hundreds Die in Horn War: BBC Report by Alex Last). We are time and again compelled to remind you how this media mercenary is smacking of foul and stench to the Ethiopian mind, for which nothing is more sacrosanct than the body of a fallen Ethiopian hero! Alexander Last is committing a blasphemy against Ethiopia, and the sad thing is that he is committing this crime while wearing a Reuters badge. The deeds of Alexander Last are criminal at best and blashphemous at worst for which it remains our firm conviction that the Reuters News Group would not see the problem with indifference anymore. |
