Television: The Week, Entertainment Weekly 22/11/96 - Bruce Fretts

CHOICE RERUNS

Sexist fantasy? You bet. But 1992's short-lived MANN & MACHINE (Sci-Fi, Tuesdays-Fridays beginning Dec. 5, 6-7 p.m.) was also an undeniably guilty pleasure. Forget boring David Andrews as futuristic cop Bobby Mann--it's Yancy Butler, as his cyborg partner, Eve Edison, who makes Mann worth watching. Eve has the emotional development of a 7-year-old and the physical development of a supermodel. Yet somehow, the sultry Butler still isn't a star. She's since appeared in another fun NBC flop, South Beach, and in John Woo's Hard Target, Jean-Claude Van Damme's only decent movie. At least one positive thing came out of Mann & Machine: Executive producer Dick Wolf transplanted the talented S. Epatha Merkerson, who played a no-nonsense police captain, to a similar role in his long-running Law & Order.
