A nice surprise in the form of this rental release of a 1993 t.v. pilot starring Yancy Butler, her of the expressive eyebrows from Hard Target. She gets rather more to do here, and very well she does it too as Kate, a daring, but small time burglar. Her loose cannon brother gets involved in a diamond smuggling lark with some ex-KGB agents, who he makes the mistake of trying to rip off. He's actually working for Roberts (the excellent John Glover), a shady US government agent who he also makes the mistake of ripping off. When Roberts drags Kate into the plot, the kind of relationship that t.v. series are made of appears like magic before our eyes. South Beach is US t.v. at its glossiest, more than a little reminiscent of Miami Vice, and features a stand out cameo from legendary rock chic Patti D'Arbanville, light years away from her sexy schoolgirl performance in 1976's Bilitis. Let's hope a series is forthcoming.
