PICKS & PANS: tube., People, 7/6/1993 David Hiltbrand

SOUTH BEACH
NBC (Sun., June 6, 9 p.m. ET)

In this new puttin'-on-the-glitz action series, Yancy Butler (Mann & Machine) plays a cunning crook-of-all-trades working Miami's South Beach, the neon and shocking-pastel playground for beautiful people. But a bungled diamond heist gives a tightly wrapped federal agent (a crew-cut John Glover) the leverage to coerce her into doing his dirty work.

For those who miss Miami Vice's flashy skulduggery, hip clothes and decor, blaring music, blitzing action, bristling guns and speedboats knifing through aquamarine waters, well, you just caught a wave. The formula just doesn't pack as much sizzle the second time around. The camera surely loves Butler, though.

After this two-hour pilot, the show moves to Tuesdays at 9 for six weeks. Grade: B
