Firesilk's Book of Shadows
There are four elemental weapons. These are the dagger (or Athame), the wand, the chalice, and the pentacle. They are the focus and receptacle of elemental energies during ritual. Dagger: This represents the element of Air and is the symbol of the God. It should be a double edged steel blade. The handle should be black. Ideally it would be best to forge your own dagger, but few people have access to the equipment or the skills to do this. As a close second, the dagger should be purchased new, and never used for any other purpose. As preparation to it's use as a ceremonial dagger I paint the godname for Air in yellow on the handle. Wand: This represents the element Fire. It can be constructed of any wood, but I prefer oak or yew. I obtain the wood from an oak tree near where I live, cutting the branch from the tree after I offer a prayer to the spirit of the oak requesting it grant me a branch suitable to my purpose. The prayer: Mighty Oak, father of Trees, I beg a portion of thy body to aid me in the Service of the Lord and Lady. I thank thee, for giving of thy life essence, and further pray that you will endow this branch with your essence and wisdom. I take care to never take more than I need and to make the cut as clean as possible, so as not to cause more than minimal harm. I shave the branch free of bark and attach two crystals to it with silver wire, one on either end. (one of quartz and one of onyx). I then wrap the joints with black and white silk to finish attaching the crystals firmly. After this is done, I paint the wood and the silk with gold paint. Near the quartz end I paint three white bands and near the onyx end, I paint three black bands. In the center I paint the godname for Fire in red. Chalice: The chalice represents the element of Water and is the symbol of the Goddess. It should be made of fine glass or silver. I paint the godname of the element of Water around the rim in blue. Pentacle: This represents the element of Earth. It is a circle of wood or stone with a pentagram inside a circle carved or painted on it. If it is made out of wood, the circle should be 4 to 8 inches in diameter and painted black, the pentacle done in white. If it is stone, the pentacle should be painted in a good contrasting color (white if the stone is dark, or black if the stone is light), or carved into the surface. Around the outer edge of the pentacle the godname of Earth should be carved or painted in black (or white if that is the contrasting color). |
