Firesilk's Book of Shadows

A Mabon Ritual

The Altar should be provided with:

a lighted yellow candle

a sheaf of wheat or dried corn cobs

a chalice filled with wine or cider

a plate of bread

Incense and burner (the incense should be pine, sage, or myrrh)

Athame

Wand

Pentacle

The ritual itself should be commenced about a half hour before sunset.

Consecrate a circle and call the quarters.

Recite the following Prayer:

The day and the night are equal

But night is growing longer

It is the time of the Harvest

For on this day the God dies

That our lives may continue

Through the cold and the dark that is to come.

We celebrate the Gift of the God

As the fullness of Mother Earth is delivered

And the Lord lays down his life.

All hail the dying God!

May we remember with love our Lord

(drink the cider)

All hail the living Goddess!

May we receive with love the fruits of Her bounty

(eat the bread)

Watch the sun setting, contemplate that as the sun vanishes the God dies and goes to stand in the Summerland awaiting his time of rebirth. When the sun has sunk below the horizon, emit a ululating wail, to mourn His passing and announce His arrival in the Summerlands.

Wait in meditation until the candle burns out and then close the circle.
