Special "Image of the Year"
Note... I am deviating on the
normal "Image of the Month" picked from one of the regular
photographers on the Nature Gallery this time. The summer of 2000 has been a very long
hot summer, with temperatures well above normal and precipitation almost non-existent in
the western United States. This has resulted in what I call "the year of the
fires!" Nature
is not always the beautiful "National Park" images that everyone seems to have
come to expect in photography. I want dedicate this really "fantastic true
nature image"
to all the firefighters out there, that have given their all in fighting these forest and
wild fires.

Behavior Analyst, was standing on a bridge over the Bitter Root River, and took the photo
with a digital camera. Since he was working as a firefighter, he will get no monetary
benefits, as the picture is public property. John is from Fairbanks, Alaska." |

I am rarely moved to
write a letter to a website but the image by John McColgan of the forest fire
provokes such emotion that I felt compelled to write. A truely excellent image
both in terms of nature and photojournalism. Story telling at its peak.
Two elk gripped in a life and death struggle to survive a raging forest stand in
