STUART J. HAYWARD

Stuart Jackson Hayward was born in Bermuda in 1942, the oldest child of school-teacher Mary Jackson Hayward and jazz pianist Lance Hayward.

For 40 years Stuart built a reputation as an environmental activist and educator. He spearheaded numerous pressure groups to protect Bermuda's environment, including the Admiralty House Park Association which preserved Admiralty House Park for the people of Pembroke. He co-authored and co-edited the book Bermuda's Delicate Balance, for which the Bermuda National Trust awarded him an Honorary Life Membership. He has lectured at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research and was Director of the Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) Association of Bermuda. In 1990, he Initiated and co-conducted an Island-wide free seminar on Conflict Resolution.

Since the 1970's, Stuart has written opinion columns for the Bermuda Sun, the Bermudian Magazine and the Mid-Ocean News. He was elected to Parliament as an Independent in 1989 to represent Pembroke West Central.

In 1994 Stuart left Bermuda to attend Antioch New England Graduate School where he achieved an MSc. in Environmental Studies. He then served the school as Diversity Advocate and was an Adjunct Faculty Member.

Since returning to Bermuda in 1999, Stuart has been writing almost exclusively for the Bermuda Sun. He spearheaded the Bermuda Leadership Forum, dedicated to elevating the qualities of leadership in Bermuda. He is also chairman of the Environmental Coalition (ECO), an information-sharing group.

Stuart is a dedicated environmentalist, skilled facilitator and seasoned journalist. He has devoted himself to improving the quality of life for all Bermudians.
