Mary Adams

Mary Adams was probably born in about 1770, possibly in Halifax County, Virginia. She was a second cousin to President Adams. She married Joseph Overton on 8 February 1789 in Halifax County. They later moved to Anderson County, Tennessee with three daughters and 'squatted' on land within the south tract of the Henderson & Co. lands, on Hinds Creek, ...approximately 7 miles upstream from Clinch River. Their first son, John, was born there on January 1, 1800.

Joseph, Mary, and their children are said to have travelled by "pack mule train".

Records show two deeds to her husband, Joseph Overton:

• A deed "proven in open Court by Henry Delilad" from Robert Warner to Joseph Overton, 1808.
• A warranty deed from Robert Tivis to Joseph Overton, August 1818, for 172 acres located on Hinds Creek, in the area that was later known as "Brushy Valley" for $258.00, after living there for 18 years or more.

Mary was the mother of 15 children.
