Joseph Overton (Sr.) was born in about 1769 in Halifax County, Virginia. He married Mary Adams on 8 February 1789 in Halifax County. They later moved to Anderson County, Tennessee with three daughters and " 'squatted' on land within the south tract of the Henderson & Co. lands, on Hinds Creek, ...approximately 7 miles upstream from Clinch River. Their first son, John, was born there on January 1, 1800.

Joseph, Mary, and their children are said to have travelled by "pack mule train".

Records show two deeds to Joseph Overton:

    A deed "proven in open Court by Henry Delilad" from Robert Warner to Joseph Overton, 1808. A warranty deed from Robert Tivis to Joseph Overton, August 1818, for 172 acres located on Hinds Creek, in the area that was later known as "Brushy Valley" for $258.00, after living there for 18 years or more.

Joseph Overton died in September, 1840 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He was the father of 15 children.
