"Study English in California!"

Have you ever considered studying English in the United States? If so, this page will help you make up your mind. If the thought never crossed your mind, you may find a few reasons here to start packing your bags.

The Importance of English???

Davis is only 90 minutes from San Francisco Airport, one of the great gateways to America!
We're all tired of hearing that without English you can't do much of anything today. Well, whether we like it or not, that gross exaggeration happens to be pretty much true. So... what to do?
Uncle Sam Wants YOU to speak English! (But do we really HAVE to???)
There are plenty of instructional systems out there that claim to be absolutely and totally infallible, when really all they do is shackle you to your computer for hours and hours on end. From my own personal experience, I can tell you that the only way to learn a language, whether it's English, French, Italian, German, or Martian, is to go to the country and immerse yourself in the language day after day. (Which may be why there are so few totally fluent speakers of Martian.)

Why the United States?

These days we can no longer pretend that there are other world powers. The globalization of the economy and the proliferation of multinationals has made "American English" -- NOT "the Queen's English-- the single international language of the 21st Century.

For Europeans, there is another advantage. Contrary to what one experiences in British schools, you are not likely to find yourself bumping into large groups of your own compatriots. The American educational system is simply too big to become overpopulated with any foreign group, or with foreigners in general. You can be sure that, after paying your money to go study in America, you will actually be forced to use your new skills. You will get your money's worth!

Yosemite, the Jewel of the American National Park System, is a short drive from Davis.

California and Davis! ]

Why in Davis, California?

Davis is a small city of about 55,000 residents (including the university), located about 15 minutes west of Sacramento, the capital of California, and about an hour from San Francisco. The highway is world-class, and the train, bus, and air shuttle links are the most convenient in America.

Home of the University of California at Davis, (UCD), the "city" itself is a American typical college town -- clean, bourgeois, energetic, progressive, and very very safe. So safe that the police even have time to chase after bicyclists, pedestrians, and skaters who fail to stop at stop signs, or dog-owners who don't pick up after their dogs. They even build tunnels so that frogs can cross the road safely. Very, very progressive.

What is the Extension Center?

This is a division of the university open to un-matriculated students. Anyone can take courses -- not just English courses, but on a wide variety of subjects -- and in many cases Extension Center students are allowed to take regular university courses as well. And (Big Secret!) it is a lot easier to transfer into the regular university after you have successfully taken some courses as an extension student!
