Origin: Native to Brazil
Hardiness: Hardy to 15 to 20 degrees; Zones 8a, 9 and 10
Growth: Medium rate of growth to 10 feet
Form: Upright dome about 6 feet wide

Leaves: Oval leaves up to 4 inches long;
easily become chlorotic;
new growth has a purple cast

Flowers: Two inch tubular flower with five petals;
blooms from March to July;
colors fade from purple to white

Exposure: Prefers part shade
Water: Regular watering required
Soil: Prefer well drained, slightly acidic soils
Fertilizer: Acid food and iron prevent chlorosis in alkaline soils
Prune: Head back after flowering; can be kept as 3 foot mound
Problems: Watch for chlorosis (yellowing leaves)

Common name comes from the three colors of the flowers. They begin a dark purple, fade to lavender, then to white. Plants will be deciduous or partly deciduous in coldest areas of its range. Good specimens in containers.
