  Origin: Native of Australia


Hardiness: Hardy to 20 degrees; USDA Zones 9 and 10
Growth: Fairly rapid growth to 10-15 feet, taller trained as a tree
Form: Loose, narrow mound without pruning
Leaves: Narrow, 3", medium green; new growth is bronze
Flowers: Spikes are bright red, 4-6" long, spring to fall
Fruit or Seeds: Brown capsules persist for several years
Exposure: Full sun to part shade
Water: Likes to be moist, but can withstand drought
Soil: Good drainage; alkaline soil okay
Fertilizer: Nitrogen and iron to correct yellow leaves
Prune: In the autumn after flowering, prune to shape; espalier
Problems: Few problems

There are several good varieties that are lower growing. Flower color is darker on some varieties, so select the plant while it is in bloom. Attracts hummingbirds.
