  Origin: Native to New Zealand


Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 9 and 10
Growth: Rapid growth to 10 feet with spread to 6 feet
Form: Loose, open form if not pruned
Leaves: Very glossy, 3 inch oval
Flowers: White or green; inconspicuous; funnel shape
Fruit or Seeds: Small; yellow or orange
Exposure: Full sun at coast, partial shade elsewhere
Water: Moderate to generous; at least monthly during summer
Soil: Well drained sand or loam; moist
Fertilizer: Spring or fall or not at all
Prune: Spring and summer to shape
Problems: Root rot in poorly drained soils

Valued for its extremely shiny leaves. Varieties are available with yellow or white variegations. 'Marble Queen' is a dwarf variety with white variegation; it grows to about three feet.
