Origin: From tropical South America
Hardiness: Best along coast with mild winters and cool summers
Growth: Medium growth rate to 2' up to 12'
Form: Upright or trailing (best for hanging baskets)
Leaves: Glossy, pointed oval leaves; some with red veins
Flowers: Pendulous; red, pink, white, purple; spring to fall
Exposure: Needs shade and humidity in hot summer areas
Water: Keep them moist; mulch inland; water overhead
Soil: Well drained organic loam; acidic
Fertilizer: Acid base fertilizer monthly spring to fall
Prune: Cut back in spring, pinch and deadhead in summer
Problems: Fuchsia gall mites blister leaves - remove damaged stemsThough fuchsia gall mite is a serious pest in California, the plant continues to be popular. The University of California lists the following cultivars as resistant to fuchsia mites: Baby Chang, Chance Encounter, Cinnabarina, Isis, Mendocino Mini, Miniature Jewels, Ocean Mist and Space Shuttle. The following species are also listed: Fuchsia boliviana, Fuchsia miniutiflora, Fuchsia microphylla hidalgensis, Fuchsia radicans, Fuchsia thymifolia, Fuchsia tincta and Fuchsia venusta.
