Hebe 'Patty's Purple'

  Patty's Purple Hebe

  Family: Scrophulariaceae

  Origin: New Zealand

Hardiness: USDA Zones 9 and 10; best at coast
Growth: Medium rate of growth to 3 feet by 3 feet
Form: Mound
Leaves: Half inch, dark green, opposite leaves; red stems
Flowers: Two inch spikes of light purple and white flowers; spring to summer
Exposure: Full sun at coast; part shade inland
Water: Weekly watering to keep soil moist
Soil: Prefers a moist, organic soil
Fertilizer: Complete fertilizer in spring
Prune: Head back slightly after bloom to keep compact
Problems: Fusarium wilt possible

This Hebe is a good plant for low borders, but it does require extra care. Dead flower spikes are unsightly and should be removed. Cut back somewhat after the plant flowers to prevent it from becoming too open and rangy. Sometimes sold as Hebe buxifolia 'Patty's Purple'.
