Origin: Native to Eastern Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zones 7, 8 and 9; best on north and central coasts
Growth: Medium growth rate to 5 to 10 feet tall
Form: Upright mound with spread less than height
Leaves: 3" eliptical, dark green, bronzy in spring
Flowers: Clusters of bell shaped flowers in spring; white, pink, red
Exposure: Part shade inland; full sun ok at coast
Water: Likes to be moist
Soil: Organic, acid, well drained; amend with peat moss
Fertilizer: NPK acid and iron - May Day, 4th of July and Labor Day
Prune: Deadhead flowers and head back lightly to shape
Problems: Chlorosis (yellow leaves) if not fertilizedA neat and tidy plant with interesting flowers. There are many named varieties of Pieris, varying in leaf color and size, flower color, and size of the plant. Compact forms are available.
