  Mugho Pine

  Family: Pinaceae

  Origin: Southern and Central Europe


Hardiness: Hardy to 0 degrees; USDA Zones 7, 8, 9 and 10
Growth: Slow to 3 feet high by 5 feet wide or somewhat larger
Form: Open, irregular mound
Leaves: Dark green, densely set, 2 inch needles; bundles of two
Cone: Two inch, brown cone in the fall and winter
Exposure: Full sun or partial shade; not for desert
Water: Very little needed once established; monthly in summer
Soil: Well drained
Fertilizer: None
Prune: Thin and head in spring to shape and control size; never shear
Problems: Watch for scale, mealybugs, aphids

Use Mugho Pine anywhere you would use a small Juniper. It is easy to control the size with just a yearly pruning with hand pruners. If you want low maintenance evergreens, include this plant in the mix.
