In 1774 land west of the Appalachians was purchased from the Cherokee Indians, included in this land was present day Madison County, Kentucky. Shortly after this huge purchase of land, Daniel Boone marked a path that would become known as the Wilderness Trace. It provided access to settlers migrating from North Carolina and Virginia via the Cumberland Gap. Madison County was formed in 1785 and many pioneer families following the Wilderness trace ended their migration and settled in the southeastern area of this new county. Included among these early settlers are Bazil Baker, Isham Lane, Benjamin Van Winkle, Patrick Coyle, Thomas Shifflett, Thomas Lamb , also the Abrams and Lax/Lakes families. These families all lived within riding or walking distance and they all had large families, their children and grandchildren inter-married into each others families.

Isham was the first of the seven sons to serve under George Washington.
The record of Isham Lane , furnished herein was found in the file based upon his Military Service in the war of the Revolution.
He was born in the month of September, 1757 in Louisa County, Virgina.
The names of his parents was not given. His Father and family was living in Albemarle County, Virginia during the Revolution. Isham was also a resident of Albemarle County when he enlisted. After enlisting , he served three months in 1778 as Sargent in Captain Wallace's company of Virginia troops. He also served in 1779, the names of the Officers not given. In 1780 he served two months in Captain Johnson's Company, Colonel Dick's Regiment. He served five months in 1781 in Captain Webb's Company, Colonel Steven's Virginia Regiment , during this service he was at the siege of Yorktown and saw the surrender of Cornwallis. Isham held the rank of Sargent in the Revolutionary War. He was allowed pension on his application August 13, 1832 in Madison County Kentucky.
Affadavit of Isam Lane a resident of the County of Madison and State of Kentucky aged eighty four years certify that I searved with Thomas Shifflet two towers of three months in the revolutionary war each making six months we searved together Our officers was Captain Henry Berk and Austin Mills Company and Collonel Reubin Linseys Redgment.
I was from the County of Orange and he was from the County of Albemarle both in the state of Virginia. I have known Thomas Shifflet ever since my earliest recollection, we did not reside more than one mile apart altho in different Counties I further State that I was at the marriage of Thomas Shifflet and Elizabeth Lamb in the County of Orange and State of Virginia they was living in the same neighbourhood and she knew that She was living in Orange County she supposed that he was living in Orange County to.
I well recollect of being at their marriage it was three months after I was married in the year Seventeenhundred and eighty eight they was married by Jacob Wiats who was a Baptist Clergyman that we searved in the same Ridgment together in the war of the revolution and Elizabeth Shifflet who made this declaration is the same person that I saw married to Thomas Shifflet who servd with me in the war as stated above. That she now resides in the County of Madison Kentucky given from under my hand this 6th day of July 1843 the above serves was the year Cornwalis surendered.
Affadavit of Isam Lane made in madison County, KY states he was residing in Albemarle Co, VA during the Revolution now age 74 (1832) and has known John Hunter since he was a boy. Said Hunter's father kept a public house in Goochland Co, VA on the Great Road from Staunton to Richmond. I was at said Hunter's fathers according to the best of my recollection 1777 when said Hunter enlisted as a regular soldier into the service. I was frequently at his fathers during the Revolution after john Hunter enlisted and always understood he was out in the army, I understood from his father's family. In 1780 I was out in the militia and was at his father's and saw John Hunter who had just returned from the army. I have known John Hunter from that time to this.
After the Revolutionary War, according to family history, Isham Lane migrated to the North forks of the Holston River . This area was explored by Daniel Boone during his expeditions to Kentucky, he called the area Wolf Hills because his dogs were attacked by wolves there.
The first white settlers arrived in this area in the 1760s. Isham, after spending about two years there removed to Kentucky following the Boone Trail over Cumberland Gap, making the move by pack horse since there were no wagon roads.
Isham settled in the part of the Kentucky that is Madison County. He was offered land near Richmond but being primarily a hunter he chose land in the southeastern area of the County that had more wilderness and therefore more game. He and Nancy built a log cabin on this new land, near a spring, it was here that they raised their children.
After the game thinned out he and his sons cleared the land for farming. They remained on this farm for the rest of their lives. A new cabin was built in later years further up on the ridge. Nancy died, I believe, about 1847. Isham died on June 20, 1852 at the age of 96, and is buried on a ridge east of the Muddy Creek - Dreyfus Road, one mile north of Dreyfus, Kentucky. A marble stone marks his grave.
