Keynote Speaker:
From IBM's
Santa Teresa Lab

Krishna Kulkarni

"Hot Off the Press …The New SQL-99 Standard"
Krishna Kulkarni is with IBM in San Jose since 1997. Prior to this he worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, Tandem Computers, Inc. and Informix Software, Inc. He represents IBM at the ANSI committee responsible for the SQL standard and is part of the US delegation to the corresponding ISO committee.  Krishna has been participating actively in both standards organizations for nearly 10 years.  He has contributed extensively to the design of object-relational and procedural extensions in SQL-99, the fourth edition of the SQL standard published in late 1999. Krishna  is a co-author of the book "Object-oriented Databases: a semantic data model approach", published by Prentice-Hall. He has presented tutorials on the SQL standard in SIGMOD '92, VLDB '93, and ICDE '94, and on object-relational database systems in VLDB '97. Krishna holds a Ph. D.  in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK."

The keynote will be on the newly-published SQL-99 standard and the work that is currently ongoing for standardization in the next couple of years.  Briefly the new features in SQL-99 are:

1) User-defined types (distinct types, structured types)
2) User-defined functions, procedures
3) Methods
4) Type Hierarchy
5) Typed Tables
6) Table Hierarchy
7) Typed views
8) View Hierarchy
9) Triggers
10) Recursive queries
11) Procedural extensions
12) Binding to Java

The work that is currently ongoing and likely to be standardized in a year or two:

1) OLAP extensions - Ranking, cumulative distribution, moving sum, cumulative sum, regression functions, etc.

2) Management of external data - data links and heterogeneous databaseaccess through the concept of foreign tables.
