Anime is the art of
Japanese animation. Unlike other parts of the world, in
Japan, cartoons are for everyone. They long ago discovered
that animation is easier and cheaper than full live-action
Hollywood style productions. Animation is also the best way
to bring the largest variety of stories to the most people.
In Japan there are more opportunities for non-mainstream
stories to see final film, because they are not trapped in a
ratings-laden-high-budget-investment system.
Anime topics range
from love stories and comedies, to heroic space battles and
sayd historical tales, and gothic horror. And almost
anything in between, bouncing children for school age kids
to extremely bloody and violently pornographic material for
the older, and even to some of our standards, sicker types.
To each their own.
My tastes in Japanese
animation are a little simpler, some of the humourous
student dramas (Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Kimagure Orange
Road) to the robot battle suits, (Bubblegum Crisis, Neon
Genesis Evangelion) to the supernatural (Blue Seed, Silent
Mobius) TO the pure space opera (Lensman, etc.) to the
purely fantastical (Ellcia, Luna Varga, the Slayers). You'll
find links and tidbits to all contained here-in...
eventually.
