MG Owners Club International Rally 8-13th May
1997
Chris and Mary Backlund, the local MGOC
representatives invite the Wycombe area MG Owners Club over to the island every couple of
years. In May 1997 the program included a day trip to the small island of Herm, a treasure hunt, concours, and a
"pub hunt".
 |
The highlight of the event for me
was the concours on Sunday morning. Over 80 MGs had gathered on the North arm of the
Albert pier at St Peter Port harbour. As you
can see in the picture, the variety of vehicles was almost as stunning as the quality. I
must admit to lusting after the red MGC at the bottom of this shot. |
In the next shot my MGB can be
seen (Pageant blue, centre top). The main display consisted of the visiting cars, and the
locals were loosely gathered nearby in the main carpark. A bit of a shame, as they would
have looked good among their mainland cousins. |

A selection of TDs were lined up on the western edge of the
concours. |
This MGC caught my eye. A very nice example I wouldn't mind
taking home. This car was so perfect, even down
to nice shiny plates inside the engine bay, I am sure it must have been built up from a
heritage shell with mostly new parts. If you recognise the car please correct me if I am
wrong. |

A final shot after the show, taken at Cobo. From left to right is my son Christopher, wife
Laura, and myself. The rally plate on the bumper remained for a couple of weeks and is now
sitting on a shelf in my spare room. |
