TMS=CARNAGE=BS

(March 28, 1999) - Well, race fans, I've had enough of this 120 million-dollar spectacle called Texas Motor Speedway. This past weekend has pushed me over the edge.
Saturday's BGN race was a catastrophe. Wreck after wreck after wreck. That's sometimes not surprising in a BGN race because a lot of the drivers lack experience. But these wrecks were not caused by inexperienced drivers. This might be a terrible race track. Mercifully, the race was called because of rain. Maybe the rain kept someone from a serious injury.
Then we got to the Primestar 500 where the 43 best stock car racers on the planet are competing. And the same stuff happens ! BINGO ! The little light bulb goes off . This IS a terrible race track. No doubt in my mind.
Yes, I'm pissed off, but I can only imagine the consternation felt by all the car owners who have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars at this track. And the drivers who risk career-ending injuries racing on this track. We still don't know if Jeff Gordon and Mike Skinner will have to miss any races because of the injuries they sustained today.
Let's get to the "BS" part of the equation. Bruton Smith. It's HIS track. One of his six. He had to buy and then shut down North Wilkesboro just to get a race date for this death-trap known as TMS. I wish King William II would have stood up on his back legs and prohibited this exchange of race-dates, but that's another column.
200,000+ butts in the bleachers. That's not likely to discourage BS from continuing these atrocities.
All I can think is there must have been no roller derby or professional wrestling this afternoon and some 'fans' may have given in to BS's claims for excitement. I don't agree that's excitement - I think it's shlock and bull crunchies of the highest order. This isn't Winston Cup Racing - it's BS. Trust me.
