Let's Suppress The Press
By M.L. Morgan
We have been recently informed by one of our readers that Tim Sullivan, formerly Nascar's Communications Manager, has been relieved of his position. This was apparently as a result of his voicing an opinion about Nascar's NEW policy by which they own the rights to every syllable uttered and/or written about anything remotely related to Nascar racing.
We think this is the most preposterous bunch of crap we have ever heard. Sometimes, the arrogance of King William II astounds even a professional, unbiased reporter. And we don't shock easily. Trust me.
Nascar/King William II is suffering from delusions which were incurred by reading their own self-generated press releases. Nascar is not the only game in town. Sorry. Admittedly it's one of the fastest growing entertainment businesses but it certainly isn't the cure for the common cold or anything closely related. Spare me, please.
We have long suspected Nascar/Winston Cup Racing was reaching the saturation level. Building tracks on every corner. Nascar has abused its old fan-base with its absurd escalation of prices to the point we can't take the whole family to a race any more. That's not what built the Nascar fan-base. But we don't want to get side-tracked.
The very idea Nascar would have the audacity to claim the rights to an individual's writing is tantamount to complete censorship. Not in this lifetime, pal. This isn't Nazi Germany.
I'm sure we've all visited Nascaronline, the official organ of Nascar. Big "N", little organ. Never any controversy there. Amazing how many news stories don't get reported there. Nothing about Tim Sullivan.
We don't wear rose-colored glasses and we know our readers don't, either. We are outraged by Nascar's latest edict. But our opinions won't be affected. We tend to say what is on our mind. Our esteemed editor, Helen Waite, still keeps us in line. If Nascar has a problem, I just say go to Helen Waite.
