Parity - Not In This Life Time, Pal !
By M.L. Morgan
Well, race fans, Nascar has seemed to embark on another amusing series of rule's changes which are apparently intended to make us dumb fans think all race cars are created equal, just because Nascar says it is so. Spare me, please.
Recently we have heard about the common templates for all the race car bodies. We have commented on this suggestion - we think it sucks - very bad idea.
Now we are hearing Nascar would like to use a "common template" engine based on the SB II Chevy engine. We think this would also be a bad idea. Also sucks.
The fan base for Winston Cup Racing was built on competition, among other things. We all had our favorite drivers and our favorite manufacturers. The very term 'racing' implies a contest. Does Nascar know better, all of a sudden ?
We don't think so. We don't think Nascar is capable of re-inventing the wheel. We think this latest barrage upon our senses is just a diversion.
Michael from Helltown, King William II's new head lackey, would love for us to forget how we are getting gouged every week at every track.
We get lip-service from Bruton Smith about reduced ticket prices at some of his tracks, of which I am a part owner, I might add - just so you don't think I'm being partial. He reduced the prices of tickets which required a telescope to view the track, and then raised the prices of telescope rental. Spare me, please.
We don't think these myriad rule's changes are mere coincidence with the fan's uproar about the escalating prices of taking a family to a race. Just more smoke and mirrors. Another sleight of hand deal by Nascar. Perhaps if we are wondering about parity amongst the manufacturers, we will ignore the rest of the picture. NOT.
Parity will never exist in Nascar. Single-car teams will never again be competetive. The manufacturer of the week, read, whoever pays Nascar the most, will always get absurd advantages. This is just binness as usual. We are not stupid. We know Nascar is fueled by money. My disdain for this premise is that the money comes from the fans.
Next season the Dodge teams will come back to the party. This will be hysterical as we watch Nascar change rules hourly to accommodate the new kids with the deep pockets. Nascar will again call it a quest for parity, but Race Views will be more blunt. Trust me.
