The Nascar Family

By M.L. Morgan

Well, race fans, on race days we see all the fans wearing the colors of their favorite teams, drivers, sponsors, or manufacturers. We like that.

Today we are all wearing the same color - black. We are in mourning.

We have lost a young driver, Adam Petty. Very tragic.

We have been writing about this business for many years and we have had to lament the loss of a racer more times than we care to remember. It hurts us just as much each time.

There is no "bright side" when a driver leaves us much too soon. Only a Stoic would even suggest that. We are hardly Stoic.

We have cried with the other fans. "With" is the important word. All the race fans cried together, as a family would. We all knew we had lost a family member.

Nascar race fans are a special family. We have our 'friendly' disagreements if Ford or Chevy or Pontiac is better. These disputes are instantly forgotten when we encounter a tragedy such as this. That's what makes the Nascar family so special.

We have read many tributes to young Adam Petty, as it should be. He was a fine young man. He had that infectious Petty smile. Never heard him quoted as saying a bad word about anyone. As it should be. The Petty's don't stoop to that.

We mourn his untimely death, as all race fans are. Very sad.

But we salute the race fans for their unity in mourning.

We are proud to be a member of this very special family.
